Useful novice chaser last season. Similar standard over hurdles in 2022/23 and returns to the smaller obstacles after a 6-month break.

Won a soft-ground novice hurdle at Wincanton in February and shaped well when placed in 2m handicaps at Newbury and Sandown in March. One of 2 leading contenders in this for the stable and it'll be interesting to see which one the betting prefers.

Had Jipcot behind in third when landing the Imperial Cup at Sandown in March. Ended the season with a creditable fifth of 19 at the Aintree Grand National meeting. Should be in the shake-up if ready to roll after his summer break.

Useful novice hurdler last season, including a win in the Grade 2 Dovecote at Kempton (2m, soft) in February. His opening handicap mark looks workable and big player if fully primed after 6 months off.

Career best when winning 12-runner handicap hurdle at Cartmel (17f, good to soft) in June. Not so good in a Galway handicap next time but he didn't run too badly on the Flat at Listowel last month. Yard won this in 2022

Consistent sort who scored in the mud at Exeter (18.5f) and Wincanton (2½m) last season. Speedy enough to cope with the shorter trip and has gone well fresh before.

Three-time winner over hurdles in Ireland. Also scored over fences here last December but that was a standout effort in his first season with this yard. Others are more compelling.

Took time to click in Britain but won 2m Huntingdon handicap hurdle in March. Impressed with how he travelled when third of 16 in Imperial Cup at Sandown (2m, soft) later that month (final start for Ben Pauling). Could have his name on a good handicap this term. Due to run 3.20 Chepstow Saturday.

Fairly useful Flat/hurdles winner for Noel Meade who has made a good start to life in Britain, winning 2m handicaps at Wincanton and Hereford last winter. Very disappointing in the Morebattle at Kelso on final start but no surprise to see him resume his progression this season.

Forecasts

Lump Sum (11/10), Steel Ally (7/2), Go Dante (6/1), Jipcot (17/2), Pembroke (12/1), Black Hawk Eagle (14/1), Issam (20/1), Fiveonefive (28/1), Wewillgowithplanb (40/1), Carbon King (125/1)

Verdict

Sam Thomas holds a strong hand, with LUMP SUM and Steel Ally appealing as types who can kick on again in handicaps on the back of promising novice hurdle campaigns last season. The former gets the vote with Dylan Johnston taking 5 lb off but it will be very interesting to see how the betting splits them. Imperial Cup winner Go Dante merits respect, while Jipcot would also enter the reckoning if showing up after/instead of Chepstow on Saturday.
