Looked a good prospect when making a winning debut in a 1¼m Newbury novice (good to soft) in April but things haven't gone to plan since, unseating leaving stalls in Derby at Epsom then dropping out as if something amiss in the King George Handicap at Royal Ascot.

Has shown the odd quirk but arrives on a hat-trick after Salisbury maiden and 1½m Newmarket wins in recent weeks, actually knuckling down well at latter track (reopposing Goodwood Odyssey behind in third). Respected.

Progressive adding to Haydock novice win with a useful effort to strike on Salisbury handicap debut (1½m, good to firm) 5 weeks ago. Likely has more to offer for last year's winning yard. Player.

Back on the up with a ready success at Newbury (13f) 12 days ago and ran well under a penalty at Ascot (2m) last Friday. Another 2 lb higher here but this thriving filly could have more to offer for a yard no stranger to success in this.

Frankel colt who saw things out strongly when off the mark in a 1¼m Chester maiden (good) in May. Perhaps much firmer ground was against him when well held in the King George Handicap at Royal Ascot since. Retains potential.

Yet to win but left last year's 2 efforts behind when narrowly denied in Newbury maiden on reappearance and caught the eye when sixth of 19 in King George Handicap at Royal Ascot (1½m, firm) 5 weeks later. Hooded first time. Definitely more to come from him.

Fairly useful colt who ran well in 2 handicaps before deservedly getting off the mark in 1¼m Redcar novice last month. Steps up to 1½m for the first time now.

Has failed to match the level of his very promising Newbury debut second in 2 subsequent outings but it's still early days and he now tackles handicap company for the first time.

Fairly useful maiden who has been runner-up 3 times. Last of 7 in Newbury handicap over this trip a fortnight ago and suspicion his wait for a first win will go on unless a first-time visor sparks improvement.

Forecasts

French Duke (16/5), Subsequent (10/3), Lord Of Love (9/2), Goodwood Odyssey (7/1), Gallantly (8/1), Attila The Honey (8/1), Voyage (11/1), Clockmaker (12/1), Master Builder (14/1), Midnite Storm (18/1), Crown Of India (18/1), Open Secret (33/1)

Verdict

FRENCH DUKE very much caught the eye with the way he swept past the majority of the field before some keen-going tendencies started to tell in the closing stages at Royal Ascot and can show he's on a good mark if a first-time hood helps him to settle better. Andrew Balding's Subsequent almost certainly has more to come on the back of his Salisbury handicap debut success and is second choice ahead of the thriving Attila The Honey.
