Lightly-raced 4-y-o who has improved since a gelding operation and being fitted with a hood, winning on Chelmsford return in June and following up in good style in the John Smith's Cup at York (1¼m, good to soft) 17 days ago. Another 6 lb higher now but further progress can't be discounted.

Ended 2023 with a win at Ascot (1m) and returned to land a pair of 9f Meydan handicaps in January/February. Never involved in the Wolferton at Royal Ascot on his British return and unlikely to find this much easier from a lofty mark back in a handicap.

Found a little more progress when successful at Kempton (1½m) in January but down the field in competitive handicaps at Newcastle and Royal Ascot since. Others are more persuasive.

Dual winner of 11f Kempton handicaps for Kevin Philippart de Foy last year. Respectable effort on Haydock reappearance for new yard in June but only a remote fourth on soft ground at Sandown since. Others are more likely.

Low-mileage 4-y-o who looked smart when landing a 9f Newmarket handicap last autumn. No impact in the Spring Cup at Newbury and Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot this term but there's still time for him to resume his progression. Back up in trip.

Three-time winner on turf/AW in France last summer. Not disgraced when midfield in pair of Meydan handicaps in January for Francis-Henri Graffard but beaten a long way in 2 outings in Britain for new yard. First-time cheekpieces need to make a difference.

Added to fine Sandown record when taking 1m handicap in May and has remained in form since, shaping better than the result (met trouble) when 5 lengths ninth of 20 to Enfjaar in John Smith's Cup at York latest. Might need luck if he's held up as usual from his inside stall but he's on a fair mark.

Won a valuable handicap over this trip at Newmarket under Kevin Stott last summer. Seems to be in a bit of a lull for now but runners from this yard can bounce back to form from out the blue, particularly at this meeting. Wears first-time cheekpieces.

Dual winner last term and good in-frame efforts in Cork handicaps this year. Respectable effort with cheekpieces added (retained) when 4 lengths eighth of 20 to Enfjaar in John Smith's Cup at York latest. Draw not ideal.

Resumed with victories in Chester and Windsor handicaps over this trip. Well held in the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot but showed he can mix it in top handicaps when 2¼ lengths third of 20 to Enfjaar in John Smith's Cup at York since. Respected.

Added to his excellent Chelmsford record when seeing off 8 rivals over 1m there 23 days ago. Has yet to show he's as effective on turf (admittedly after only 3 attempts) but William Buick has been booked for a stable no stranger to success in this.

All 3 wins on AW, the latest in a 1¼m handicap at the Newcastle Northumberland Plate meeting. His fourth of 16 to Crack Shot in a competitive 1m Newmarket handicap in the spring shows he acts on turf too. Considered.

Real success story for his yard, adding more wins at Southwell and Kempton (both 1m) at the start of the year. Proved he's as good on turf as AW when second at York (1¼m) in May. Respectable eighth of 29 in Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. Probably failed to stay 1½m back at Ascot since.

Useful sort who has been placed in 1¼m handicaps at Chelmsford on his last 2 outings, latterly behind Enfjaar. Just as good on turf. Solid each-way claims from an unchanged mark.

Forecasts

Enfjaar (3/1), Take Heart (7/1), Crack Shot (8/1), Tony Montana (17/2), Dual Identity (17/2), Real Gain (10/1), Stay Well (11/1), Bystander (12/1), Teumessias Fox (16/1), Aerion Power (20/1), Killybegs Warrior (22/1), King's Code (22/1), Ouzo (25/1), Sir Busker (25/1), Loyal Touch (33/1), Wadacre Gomez (33/1), Track Of Time (40/1), Max Mayhem (50/1)

Verdict

John Smith's Cup winner ENFJAAR might have even more to come and is taken to defy the handicapper again. Stay Well chased home the selection on AW at Chelmsford when seen and heads the dangers along with Bystander, who has done his winning on AW but reached the frame a in a strong Newmarket handicap in the spring. A leap of faith is needed with Killybegs Warrior but he is well treated if first-time cheekpieces help to spark a revival.
