Stalwart for Mick Appleby and the Horse Watchers for many seasons before moving on into the care of Jamie Osborne and the Melbourne 10; is slowly easing in the weights following a largely unproductive winter in Dubai (1m1f-1m2f).

Ended her progressive three-year-old season with a third-placed finish in a 1m4f Listed contest at Nantes (heavy); promises to be much better suited by a drop in trip to 1m2f, assuming that she's not overburdened by weight.

Cost €75,000 as a juvenile, and made steady progress last season with experience gained; decisive 6L winner of a four-runner Brighton maiden (1m2f, good to firm) - favourite had valid excuses - when last seen in competitive action; handicap debut.

Left John Gosden for 15,000gns last autumn off the back of a narrow breakthrough success at Sandown (1m2f, good) - beat Cape Cavalli; 3lb higher, but this trainer (doubly-represented) is known to do well with others cast-offs.

Hit the crossbar when a close second to Godolphin's Dubai Icon in a Class 3 handicap at York (1m2½f, soft) last October; 2lb higher here, and competes from a joint-career high handicap mark; stablemate of Sucellus.

Rose swiftly through the handicap ranks with a rich vein of form last summer, courtesy of a hat-trick of wins between 1m2f and 1m4f (Newmarket and York x2); that said, ended the season much less productively; was placed on sole previous AW start.

Course specialist (over 1m); made all and hung on in a game and determined manner to see off Paparazzi in a Class 4 handicap here 104-days ago; has much more on his plate in this grade, with something to prove at 1m2f.

Ex Jeremy Noseda; has raced consistently (20531) since joining Declan Carroll; was seemingly value for more than the official winning margin (¾L) when scoring over C&D in late February; sits 3lb higher; probable player.

Won three-times on turf (1m2f-1m4f) last season, culminating with a gritty display at Thirsk (Class 3) in early September; sits high enough in the weights (2lb rise) as a result, but crucially does have winning course form (1m) on his CV.

Belatedly broke his duck in a 1m2f Goodwood novice (good to firm) in early September before being short-headed by today's rival Sucellus at Sandown subsequently; no obvious reason as to why he shouldn't be there or thereabouts.

Set some stiff tasks last season, but equally fair to state that his form dipped badly from mid-summer onward; yet to win on the AW (placed off this mark over C&D in June 2018); difficult to know what to expect so others are preferred.

Society Red234
Age: 6|  Weight: 8-9| J: Barry McHugh| T: R A Fahey| OR:  83| D
10/1
Twice filled the runner-up berth from much higher marks than today's early last season (Pontefract and York); relatively unexposed on the AW (0-1) and it wouldn't come as a total surprise were he to take a marked step back in the right direction.

Forecasts

Cape Cavalli (3/1), Cockalorum (5/1), Medal Winner (13/2), Moll Davis (13/2), Society Red (10/1), Sucellus (11/1), Big Country (11/1), Jus Pires (12/1), Trevithick (16/1), Where's Jeff (22/1), Lunar Jet (28/1), Arctic Fox (50/1)

Verdict

The ready Brighton maiden scorer Medal Winner will undoubtedly catch the attention of many observers on his handicap debut, while on paper there's precious little to choose between old foes Sucellus and Cape Cavalli. Furthermore, Declan Carroll's Jus Pires rates as a probable player - appeared to be value for more than the official winning margin over C&D in February. Nevertheless, for small each-way stakes a more speculative punt is taken on the attractively weighted SOCIETY RED. Richard Fahey's charge demonstrated fairly solid form (on turf) during the first few months of last season, and is in truth wholly unexposed on a synthetic surface.
  1. Society Red
  2. Cape Cavalli
  3. Jus Pires
