7/1
Debut winner over 6f at Leicester on testing ground who was highly tried after that initial success in two subsequent starts. Should be suited by this trip on pedigree; handicap/AW debutante; has more realistic claims in this grade.

Makes handicap/stable debut having cost 25,000 guineas out of Kevin Ryan's yard. Confirmed debut promise when successful at York (6f, soft) in July but disappointed twice after that; first try at 7f, market may tell the full story.

Showed progression in each of his three 2yo runs winning by 6L on the final occasion at Brighton (7f, soft). Made running on that occasion (won with plenty in hand); handicap/AW debut, likely to progress further, leading candidate.

Improving sort from a yard that are to be respected at this venue who has twice finished runner-up over 7f at Kempton (just unable to beat another progressive sort last time). Looks on a decent mark for handicap debut; market support won't surprise.

Described as backward last year so connections must have been delighted with his Pontefract win (6f, good). Showed the benefit of his initial experience on that occasion (form has worked out well); top-class pedigree, makes his AW/handicap debut.

2-2 on AW (Fibresand) following up his initial win with a handicap success at the first time of asking (both wins over 7f). Failed to handle testing conditions returned to turf when last seen; has to prove himself on Tapeta against some useful sorts.

One of eight handicap newcomers but already off the mark on his second start looking a very professional type over 7f at Kempton (race panned out well for him). Travels strongly and looks the type who may need further; still unexposed and improving.

C&D winner who has also been successful on turf at Doncaster; both victories coming in handicaps. Well held when last seen (gelded since) in soft conditions; mark now looks a stiff one to defy, stable have a more likely contender in Custodian.

2-2 in handicaps; one of those wins coming over C&D on debut in this sphere back in January. Well held upped in grade over 1m last time (trip looks as though it will suit); both wins in small fields, faces some unexposed types off career-high mark.

Made a winning debut to his 2yo career in an autumn 7f novice despite looking as though he would appreciate the experience. Followed up with a credible performance under a penalty at Ayr (best horse at weights); more to come, decent opening mark.

Hamilton 6f fast-ground maiden winner who ran creditably on the majority of his nursery outings without looking an obvious improver. First run back from a wind op, usually leads, others look to have more potential, appears stable second choice.

Canagat (3/1), Jean Baptiste (4/1), Ayr Harbour (6/1), Melody King (13/2), Yorkshire Gold (7/1), Amazing News (7/1), Custodian (8/1), Bravo Faisal (16/1), Overwrite (20/1), One Hart (22/1), Borsdane Wood (25/1), Abstemious (40/1)

Verdict

A typically competitive 3yo handicap with plenty of unknown factors and eight of the field making their handicap debuts. Some of these may be ahead of their current marks and CUSTODIAN is taken as a tentative selection with his 2yo form looking strong and improvement on the cards. Jean Baptiste would also fall into that category after just failing to get off the mark last year but showing plenty of ability. Overwrite an emphatic Brighton winner can’t be left out of the picture along with Canagat and Melody King both of those could be better than the marks the handicapper has allotted them. Amazing News is another to enter the equation although his quirks need keeping in check.
