Easing in the weights; quiet since making all to win unchallenged in a 3m conditions event at Edgcote (good) in June 2018; a first ever Hexham runner for this Staffs-based trainer.

Much improved chaser, winning three of his nine starts since breaking the duck over 2m5½f at Kelso (good) in October 2018; 5lb rise for beating the Olly Murphy-trained Our Uncle Pat (4-5f) by ½L at Market Rasen (3m) 16 days ago.

All three wins have come at Hexham, including twice over fences under similar conditions (good 'ish'); 4lb higher than when making all to beat Dun Faw Good by 7L over C&D in June; very much one for the shortlist.

Won three on the spin over hurdles (2m3½f-3m) during a productive spring/summer of 2017; has changed ownership and very poor over fences so far (0-3); it's difficult to envisage the cheekpieces having a revolutionary impact.

Damiens Dilemmab44
Age: 11|  Weight: 10-13| J: Sam Coltherd(3)| T: W Coltherd| OR:  96| BF| CD
4/1
Veteran; won from a similar mark over C&D (good to soft) in June 2016; had a brief and successful foray in point-to-points earlier in the year (1,3,2) and was also a runner-up under rules at Cartmel (2m5f, good) in June.

Pena Doradap9
Age: 12|  Weight: 10-9| J: Rachel McDonald(5)| T: A C Whillans| OR:  92| C| D
11/2
Old-stager who represents a bang-in-form Borders trainer; rolled back the years when scoring by 7L from Nortonthorpelegend at Cartmel (3m1½f, soft) in July; soundly beaten off this revised mark since.

Apache Pilott,v44

6/1
At his very best in the Tyne Valley, a four-time course winner (2m4f-3m); prefers genuinely good ground so also has that in his favour; below-par of late (and possibly more of a spring horse); others are preferred on this occasion.

Horse silk
Miss Battent33
Age: 5|  Weight: 10-2| J: Blair Campbell(3)| T: Miss Lucinda V Russell| OR:  85| D
5/1
Half-sister to the smart staying chaser Shotgun Paddy; point-to-point winner who remains low-mileage under rules for Lucinda Russell; 4lb lower than when third to John Daniell in a 3m novices' handicap at Uttoxeter (good to soft) in June.

Forecasts

Classical Milano (7/2), Damiens Dilemma (4/1), Miss Batten (5/1), King Golan (11/2), Pena Dorada (11/2), Apache Pilot (6/1), Gold Patrol (12/1), Onlyfoolsownhorses (14/1)

Verdict

King Golan is a much improved chaser, and he provided amateur Alison Clarke with a first success in the saddle with a gritty display at Market Rasen last month. The five-year-old Miss Batten has precious few miles on the clock for Lucinda Russell and with a decent pedigree should find a suitable opportunity sooner or later. However, the advice in today's contest is to stick with one of the Hexham specialists, namely CLASSICAL MILANO. He was dominant throughout when registering a second C&D success in June, and if returning from a short break in the same fettle should go very close off just a 4lb higher mark.
  1. Classical Milano
  2. Miss Batten
  3. King Golan
