A superb 2016 campaign has cost him success this time, with the handicapper or Group 1 company serving up just a little too much on his plate. Would have claims if able to return to the form of Goodwood run (6f, soft) from August.

Has improved considerably this season, winning twice along the way over 5f/6f and also going very close in a similar contest at Haydock last time. Acts on any ground and looks very much an each-way player here despite a 4lb rise.

Won a similar contest over C&D last summer from 3lb lower and has already won from 2lb higher than today at Newmarket this season. Should appreciate a bit better ground than last time here and couldn't be ruled out of the frame.

Won the Listed Cathedral Stakes over this trip (good to firm) at Salisbury in the summer and was not far away in a competitive Newmarket handicap next time. Softer ground probably against him last time and another with each-way claims.

Just two of his 10 wins have been on turf, though that includes his latest start at Doncaster (5½f, good to soft) last month. Handicapper was impressed enough to whack him up 9lb for that. Will need another career-best to follow-up.

Has already won over C&D under an excellent ride from today's pilot this season and bettered that at Ripon (6f, soft) last time. Cut in the ground is not essential and he looks well worth a crack at this prize from 5lb higher.

Won in Listed company at Windsor in May (6f, good), but has been unable to replicate that in the face of some stiff tasks since. Well beaten at Haydock last time and a 6lb drop put him back on an attractive mark. Don't rule out a big run at a price.

Was in good form in the summer, winning at Windsor (6f, good) and then going very close in successive races after a 6lb rise. Same mark again today, giving cause for optimism that he should be thereabouts. Acts on good or slower ground.

Dual 5f winner (good to firm/good to soft) already this season and it is encouraging that he put up a career-best when runner-up here over 5½f (good to soft) in August. Gets 6f and if you can forgive his last run he is very much an each-way player.

Has enjoyed another consistent campaign and won a couple of Class 3 contests in June. Has regularly run well from similar marks to today's since then, though without getting his nose in front and looks to have frame claims at best.

Enjoyed an outstanding 2016 for the late David Nicholls and although he has been unable to win this term, he has put in some commendable efforts in defeat. However, form has tailed off a little of late and comes here with a bit to prove.

Has progressed this year, winning three times over this trip, including here in June. Best effort so far was when scoring at Ascot (good to soft) two starts ago and was not far off that behind Flying Pursuit at Ripon last time. Not ruled out.

5lb better off with Flying Pursuit for a 3¾L defeat by that reopposing rival here in July (6f, good to soft) and won on his only subsequent start at Ripon (good) last time, when front pair were 3½L clear. Up 7lb but can't be ruled out.

Won over C&D (soft) in May and another who finished behind Flying Pursuit here in July. 10lb better off with that opponent for 2L and arrives in form after a good effort at the Curragh. Cheekpieces failed at Ripon two starts ago, so visor now tried.

Looked right back to his best when winning on his reappearance at Thirsk (5f, soft) in May but not then seen until beating just one home in a hot Haydock contest last month. Heavy ground a possible excuse, but has a bit to prove today.

Was a Listed C&D winner here last year and all of his wins have been on good or softer ground. 2lb better off with Flying Pursuit for a ½L defeat by him at Ripon last time out and now in better form again he is not ruled out.

It's now over two years since he managed to win a race, though he has been competitive on plenty of occasions since. However, looks to have just gone off the boil of late and others are preferred.

Has not won on turf for well over two years, though did score on the All Weather at Chelmsford (6f) in April. His 2L fourth in a Windsor Listed contest next time was his best effort this term and he has been on the slide since.

Connections have not been to the well too often with just three runs for him this year. The last two of those have been good in the context of this, he goes well here and he could get involved once again from this mark.

Won last year's Wokingham from a 3lb higher mark, but has not looked the same horse this season in a series of comfortable or hefty defeats. On a very handy mark if the cheekpieces work (visor didn't) but it takes a leap of faith to side with him.

Forecasts

Mr Lupton (11/2), Raucous (8/1), Al Qahwa (17/2), Teruntum Star (10/1), Spring Loaded (10/1), Stake Acclaim (10/1), Flying Pursuit (12/1), Golden Apollo (12/1), Nameitwhatyoulike (14/1), Eastern Impact (16/1), Upstaging (16/1), Growl (16/1), Hoof It (16/1), Pipers Note (20/1), Eqtiraan (25/1), Outback Traveller (33/1), Edward Lewis (33/1), Orion's Bow (33/1), Kickboxer (40/1), Perfect Pasture (50/1)

Verdict

A devilishly difficult riddle to solve. Richard Fahey has won two of the last 10 runnings and his best chance this time looks to be through topweight Growl, who has claims if able to get back to his Goodwood form from August. David O'Meara trained last year's winner and he might just be able to repeat the dose with AL QAHWA, who is in good form and if he can respond to cheekpieces he could have the edge. Stake Acclaim can do just that, while others to consider include Hoof It, Nameitwhatyoulike, Golden Apollo, Eqtiraan and Edward Lewis.
  1. Al Qahwa
