Italian Group 1 winner who has also done well in Dubai but has yet to do the business in this country, dropping away tamely in a Listed event over 1m6f at York latest. Drop in trip will at least suit.

Can be hit or miss, evidenced by running poorly at Royal Ascot having won a good handicap at Epsom (1m4f, good to firm) the time before. Yard has won two of the last four runnings, so dangerous to dismiss.

Highly progressive last season with the best of his four wins coming in a valuable Class 2 handicap at Newbury (1m2f, good to soft). Has disappointingly bombed in both starts this season, so plenty to prove right now.

Previous course and distance winner who signed off last year with a win at Leicester (1m4f, good to soft) but has been held off current mark in three runs this year. Should again be competitive but vulnerable to less exposed types.

Was in great form last season prior to winning this race from a mark of 95. Now rated 5lb higher but was performing creditably prior to running as though something was amiss last time. Change of headgear here and could be a player if returning to form.

Lost his way after winning a 1m Newmarket maiden on his second start but signs of a revival when third in a valuable 1m4f handicap at Epsom (good) last time. Not many miles on the clock and very much of interest of present mark.

A revelation since joining this yard, winning for the third time in four outings when scoring at York (extended 1m2f, good to firm) last month. That race has thrown up subsequent winners, so remains feasibly-treated from just 4lb higher. Merits a place on any shortlist.

Won three times last season between 1m4f and 2m and also scored at Kempton on his return. Two subsequent efforts suggest the handicapper may now have his measure and this trip would appear on the short side for him.

9/1
Useful, multiple-winning hurdler who has returned to the Flat in cracking form, going close twice at Chester before deservedly winning at Newmarket (1m2f, good) last month. More to do off a 5lb higher mark but fully respected, given his current mood.

9/2
Easy Newcastle maiden winner who progressed to run big races in valuable handicaps at Goodwood and York last summer. Was heavily-backed at Epsom on reappearance but could only manage fourth behind Soldier In Action over 1m4f (good). Likely there is more to come and present mark may underestimate him.

Hacked up by 10L over 1m4f (good to firm) at Newbury last summer and has since scored over hurdles there but twice well-held on the Flat this year. Dropped 3lb since his last run but others more persuasive.

Three-time winner who also finished third in this for Peter Chapple-Hyam in 2015 from a 6lb higher mark. Respected for that reason but has failed to shine in three runs for this yard, having missed the whole of last year.

Progressive sort who had won at Nottingham before edging out subsequent winner Getback In Paris in a ding-dong finish at Windsor (1m2f, good to soft). Raised 5lb but no surprise if making his presence felt on first attempt beyond 1m2f, with the yard in great form.

10/1
Versatile Irish raider with nine career wins who went close in a valuable handicap at York last summer over 1m4f. Returned from a lengthy absence to win a good handicap at Cork recently and, though raised 4lb, looks to have strong possibilities for an ultra-shrewd yard.

Broroccoh36
Age: 4|  Weight: 8-10| J: David Probert| T: A M Balding| OR:  90| BF
13/2
Progressive sort who scored at Epsom in April and also ran an eyecatching race in a valuable 1m2f handicap there last time when finishing a close-up fifth, despite not getting a clear passage. Remains feasibly-treated and longer trip should suit, so no surprise to see him run a big race.

Verdict

A cracking renewal of this famous race in which Sir Michael Stoute's Shraaoh has to go on any shortlist despite a slightly underwhelming reappearance at Epsom. Irish raider Moonmeister, Carntop and recent winners Big Country and Toulson also have plenty to recommend them but the answer be lurking at the bottom of the handicap in the shape of BROROCCO. Andrew Balding's gelding caught the eye in defeat at Epsom last time out and looks sure to improve over this longer trip.
  1. Brorocco
  2. Big Country
  3. Shraaoh
