2.55 Chepstow
A few of these would need the ground to be softer to show their form, whereas Macfin had heavy ground as an excuse for a poor performance at Southwell on his latest outing and he could spring a minor surprise having shaped better than the result on his return from an absence at Stratford in October.
Macfin has yet to win under rules, but he thrived when racing in points with a tongue tie fitted for Tom Lacey, with form figures between the flags of 112311, with his wins coming on good, good-to-firm and good-to-soft ground.
He needs to show he can repeat that over fences but I donโt think heโs had a proper chance to show what he can do under suitable conditions.
Itโs possible heโs simply deteriorated since his point-to-point days having missed 585 days after a win over the useful Barney Dwan at Maisemore in 2023, but that form worked out well and he is undoubtedly well handicapped on a mark of 100 if he rediscover it now.
4.05 Chepstow
The 3m6ยฝf trip around Chepstow is going to be a stretch for a few of these, but not so STELLAR STREAM, who won a North Wales National around Bangor just over a year ago.
He lost his form for much of 2024 but sprang back to life when second to Katate Dori over slightly shorter here in January. That form, of course, received a welcome shot in the arm when the winner dotted up in the valuable Ladbrokes Trophy at Kempton, and Stellar Stream gets to race off the same mark today.
He won when first tried in cheekpieces by Kayley Woollacott, and a change of headgear, with blinkers replacing the cheekpieces now, could also help his cause.
5.15 Chepstow
Kayley Woollacott could well be in for a double on the card as her unexposed novice hurdler FIVE QUARTERS makes his handicap debut having been placed on both starts to date.
I thought he shaped very well when third to the [promising pair Kapal Layar and Pragnell over shorter here on his second start and this point-to-point graduate is very likely to be suited by the step up in trip on his handicap bow.
Out of a half-sister to smart handicap hurdler Clondaw Warrior, whose great-great-granddam produced Night Nurse, the brilliant dual Champion Hurdler and Gold Cup runner-up, Five Quarters hails from a famous racing family and is eligible for handicaps after just two runs because heโs been placed on both of those.
He's sure to progress with experience and can make a winning start in handicaps in a modest contest.
