Maurice Barnes has enjoyed a decent little spell of late, having winners with two of his last seven runners - as well as having a 40/1 third.
It would come as no surprise to me were he to add to the winners' tally with Oishin in this modest 2m Handicap Hurdle. It was only nine months ago Oishin broke his maiden tag off a mark of 98 at Newcastle. He has struggled to press on from that run but hasn't disgraced himself off three-figure marks. In the process he has slipped down to an attractive mark again (95).
He seems quite versatile trip-wise having run respectably over three miles and two and a half miles of late. Today he drops down to the minimum trip which is a slight concern, but with a bit of dig in the ground and him possessing a decent cruising speed I think he will just about stay in his comfort zone.
I'm hoping for a patient ride and a clean round of jumping today; if that's the case I can see him staying on best of all and notching up a second victory of his career.
