Players Championship 5: Lewis beats MVG on way to title

Jackpot clinched his first ProTour title of the season and a top prize of £10,000 thanks to a 6-3 triumph over Chisnall in which he narrowly missed out on a nine-dart finish.

Lewis nailed a 164 checkout en route to going 3-0 up and never looked in danger as Chizzy struggled to find his best darts despite a finish from 122.

In the final leg, the Stoke thrower fired eight perfect darts before missing double 12 to clinch the tournament in style before eventually getting the job done on double one. 

Lewis came through a final-leg decider in a high class semi-final against world number one van Gerwen, who is still searching for his first Players Championship crown of the season.

They hit 13 maximums between them while MVG also missed double 12 for a nine-darter.

Lewis' wins over Richard North, Justin Pipe and Benito van de Pas also went the distance while his other victories came against Andy Hamilton (6-2) and Peter Jacques (6-3).

Chisnall's run to the final saw him narrowly edge past Ritchie Edhouse 6-5 in the opening round, before seeing off Andy Jenkins and John Henderson to reach the last 16.

There he beat Micky Mansell before whitewashing Mark Webster to reach the final four. A dominant 6-3 victory over Alan Norris meant Chisnall booked his place in his second ProTour final in six attempts, having lost out in Players Championship 20 in 2016. 

It was another strong run for van Gerwen on the floor, but his wait for a Players Championship title in 2017 goes on, having now fallen at the semi-final stage on two occasions. 

Norris' strong form continued. Having clinched Players Championship One in Barnsley, he also made the semi-finals at the Coral UK Open before his run to the last four in Milton Keynes.

He edged out Rowby-John Rodriguez in his opening game, before making light work of Ronnie Baxter and Adam Hunt as he reached the Last 16. Victories over Gerwyn Price and Steve Beaton followed, before losing out to Chisnall at the penultimate hurdle. 

The PDC ProTour continues on Sunday, with another £75,000 prizefund up for grabs as Players Championship Six gets underway at Arena MK.
