Wimbledon 2017: Player profiles (and Sky Bet odds)

Men’s singles market leaders

Roger Federer (2/1) – Tennis' renaissance man, now 35, has been arguably the story of the season thus far. He won the Australian Open title in his first main-tour level tournament in six months and went on to taste victory in Indian Wells and Miami. Made favourite for SW19 following his latest title in Halle. His game is ideal for grass and he’s won here seven times before.

Andy Murray (100/30) – The defending champion but no doubt the sheen has been taken off the Scot in 2017. Put everything into becoming world number one of the end of last year and what many felt was an inevitable slip back has occurred. Has won only one title this season and even a strong French Open, which came unexpectedly, was followed by a first-round loss at Queen’s. Will hope his propensity for grass will help his best form kick in.

Rafael Nadal (9/2) – If Federer has been the star of the season, Nadal cannot be far behind. He was the man beaten by the Swiss in a thrilling Australian Open final and has since dominated the claycourt season once again. It is like the pair have gone back a decade, such has been their hold over the rest of the tour. Still, Nadal’s struggles on grass are deep – the last time he went beyond the last 16 at Wimbledon was in 2011. He also openly admitted that the surface could see knee problems return and says “if I have pain on the knees, then I know from experience that it's almost impossible”.

Novak Djokovic (13/2) – This time last year the Serb was the dominant force in tennis but a shock third-round defeat to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon started a slump which has still not been reversed. Things have hardly been a disaster – Djokovic still arrives in SW19 as the world number four – but he has been nowhere near the heights he reached in the early part of 2016. Personal issues, injuries and a lack of motivation have all been cited as possible reasons and Djokovic continues to search for answers - he recently sacked his coaching and fitness team and will work with Andre Agassi at Wimbledon.

Milos Raonic (14/1) – While the Big Four dominate the betting once more, the ‘best of the rest’ is last year’s runner-up. The Canadian will always offer a threat on the grass with his massive serve which regularly tops 140mph but his 2017 season has been disrupted by injuries and his preparation for Wimbledon didn’t go well at Queen’s where he suffered an early exit.

Outsiders & pretenders

Alex Zverev (22/1) – You’ll hear plenty about Zverev – he’s part of the so-called NextGen on the ATP tour and many believe he’s a future world number one. Has taken further steps forward in 2017, capturing his first Masters title in Rome, but his record in the Grand Slams remains poor. He’s never been beyond the third round at any of the majors and perhaps more worringly is he is yet to beat a top-50 player in a best-of-five-sets match. His slender physical nature is a possible reason for that and is something which may need to change for him to reach his true potential.

Nick Kyrgios (25/1) – You will likely know something about the Australian, although it may not be for his tennis-playing skills which are undoubtedly fine. He’s often described as a modern-day John McEnroe; the problem with that is the absence of any major titles. He’s abused Stan Wawrinka on court and when he basically gave up during a match last season he was duly hit with a ban and told to see a sports’ psychologist. It has worked, to some extent, with Kyrgios looking more focused and beating Djokovic earlier in the campaign. Has the skillset to go well at Wimbledon where he’s beaten Nadal in the past but an injury-hit lead-up does not bode well.

Stan Wawrinka (25/1) – Some will think this a big price about the Swiss shot-maker, who would become only the ninth man to complete the career Grand Slam by winning at Wimbledon. But grass is his weakest surface, giving him less time to wind up his delightful one-handed backhand – the long backswing is certainly an issue for him in SW19. Still, this year’s French Open finalist has reached the last eight here in the past and a player of his ability is certainly not without hope.

Dominic Thiem (40/1) – Thiem is another of the rising stars, one who grabbed the headlines when he dominated Djokovic at the recent French Open, beating him in straight sets and winning one of them 6-0. A huge forehand is a serious weapon but again you have to question whether the grasscourts are where it’s really going to happen for the Austrian.

Fernando Verdasco (250/1) – For anyone looking for a huge price, you could do a lot worse than back the Spaniard. Verdasco came closer than anyone to beating Andy Murray during his history-making 2013 run – he led their quarter-final by two sets before eventually losing 7-5 in the fifth. Verdasco served huge in the first two sets that day which helps sum him up – when in the groove he can be almost unplayable and he’s shown that with impressive runs in Doha (where he held match points against Djokovic) and Dubai this season. The big lefty serve is a serious weapon for the 33-year-old, who could go deep again with a little help from the draw.

Women’s singles market leaders

Petra Kvitova (5/1) – This year’s women’s tournament has many good stories attached to it but none would be bigger than a third SW19 title for Kvitova. When she tried to fend off a knife-wielding burglar at her home in December, the Czech had her racquet hand slashed and it was feared she would never be able to play again. Yet she returned quicker than expected and incredibly won the Aegon Classic in Birmingham recently in what was only the second tournament of her comeback. Now she’s the Wimbledon favourite. Has won the title twice before and her game is ideally suited to the grass. The question must be is Kvitova really match tight? How will she perform in a long, tight three-setter against one of the world’s best?

Karolina Pliskova (11/2) – Even including the pregnant Serena Williams, Pliskova possesses the biggest serve on the WTA tour and that will be a real weapon on the lawns of the All England Club where the Czech will look to become world number one for the first time. Pliskova surprised herself at the French Open, played on her weakest surface of clay, with a run to the semi-finals, and the aggressive style of tennis she played in Paris should work well is replicated over the next fortnight.

Garbine Muguruza (8/1) – When the Spaniard reached the final here two years ago, you could tell an impressive future lay ahead. She duly won the following season’s French Open but since then it’s been something of a struggle for the Venezuelan-born star. Injuries have not helped but in the periods when she has been fully fit in the past couple of months, Muguruza has shown signs of her best form coming back. It’s understandable why the bookies have her fairly short.

Johanna Konta (12/1) – It’s 40 years since a Briton won the ladies’ singles title at Wimbledon and there can’t have been many times since Virigina Wade’s triumph that a player from the host nation has gone off as short as 12/1. Following a highly-impressive past couple of years, perhaps Konta is feeling the weight of expectation – she was upset in the final of the Aegon Open by Donna Vekic before being hammered by Coco Vandeweghe in Birmingham. Can play on grass but looks more at home on the truer-bouncing hardcourts.

Angelique Kerber (14/1) - It’s been a miserable year for the world number one who won two Grand Slam titles and made the final of this one in 2016. She’s already lost 13 times this season and in her last three matches has won just 11 games. Throw in a recent hamstring injury and you wonder if she has any chance at all. Yet while many WTA stars are uncomfortable on the grass, Kerber is not and she’ll hope a return to the surface will be the catalyst to halt her slump.

Outsiders & pretenders

Venus Williams (14/1) – Five times the American has lifted the Wimbledon trophy and while the last such occasion came nine years ago, she must fancy her chances again, even at the age of 37. No-one in the field has the experience and know-how of playing on grass and Williams usually takes to the surface like a duck to water, never playing warm-up events ahead of Wimbledon. She made the semis here somewhat surprisingly 12 months ago and has pushed on from there, reaching the Australian Open final at the start of the year. With her sister and Maria Sharapova both absent, there’s plenty to like about Venus’ chances.

Jelena Ostapenko (16/1) – A name on many people’s lips right now following her stunning 100/1 victory at the French Open – it was the Latvian’s very first tour-level title. However, the bookies appear to have overreacted to that success. Ostapenko has only once won back-to-back tour-level matches on grass. Admittedly one of those was against Kvitova, this year’s title favourite, but it’s still a heck of any ask for the 20-year-old to win again. Her go-for-broke style should be entertaining – while it lasts.

Coco Vandeweghe (20/1) – The big-hitting American is certainly an interesting outsider. She’s won titles on grass before, recently thrashed Konta on the surface and last year reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. Earlier this season she went one better with a run to the last four of the Australian Open, one which saw her beat both defending champion Kerber and Muguruza. The 25-year-old is a player with big weapons and has the shot-making ability to make serious waves provided she is fully fit – she did suffer an injury during the recent Birmingham tournament.

Ana Konjuh (50/1) – Once the world’s best junior, the Croatian is a player with a love for the grasscourts and could hold interesting claims. Her only WTA title came on this surface in Nottingham two years ago. This season she’s already clamed plenty of wins on the grass, reaching the semis in Den Bosch and then beating former world number one Victoria Azarenka in Mallorca. However, she’s also another to have had a injury niggle of late which is a little off-putting for those considering a bet.

Tsvetana Pironkova (100/1) – I always feel it’s important to look for a player with grasscourt pedigree when it comes to betting on Wimbledon and the Bulgarian certainly has that. She was a semi-finalist here back in 2010 and has since been to the quarter-finals and last 16. A player not afraid of the net, she’ll likely need a bit of luck with the draw but is definitely someone capable of troubling the big guns on this surface.
