We’re down to the quarter-finals at the US Open which means just four singles matches on Tuesday.

I’m pretty shocked to see Alex Zverev and Borna Coric facing off in the first men’s last-eight contest and with neither being known as Mr Reliable, I’m happy to head straight to the night session match.

Carreno Busta, indeed the whole field, undoubtedly had a stroke of good fortune when Novak Djokovic was defaulted on Sunday but that sensational story meant the Spaniard’s strong first-set performance was largely ignored.

It should be remembered that he would have served for the first set had Djokovic not hit the lineswoman with the ball and had very much held his own.

Having enjoyed a relatively comfortable passage to the last eight, PCB will come into this one with confidence high – he carries a 3-1 win-loss record into it.

It’s 3-0 on hardcourts, all in straight sets. Those results include a victory at the 2017 US Open and another on the fast courts of Chengdu last season.

The Shapovalov first serve has been impressive over the past week but his second delivery has been attackable – and that’s also been reflected in those previous meetings.

A night contest should also slow conditions that little bit which you’d expect will help Carreno Busta more.

The Spaniard has held his own delivery throughout two of those three meetings and if he can keep Shapovalov guessing on return, this could be a long night for the Canadian.

Again, that won’t be what he wants. Shapovalov has already dropped five sets at this year’s event and has much more tennis in his legs. He’s also been playing doubles, losing in the quarter-finals on Monday.

I’ll take Carreno Busta to win at 13/8 but for those seeking a bigger price 12/5 about him doing so in four or five sets looks fair enough.

The other bet I’ll have is a small stake on is a first-set tie-break at 3/1.

When the pair played here in 2017 all three sets went the distance and Shapovalov has undoubtedly had problems with the PCB serve in the past.

In total, four of their nine sets have ended 7-6, while two of Shapovalov’s four matches at this tournament have begun with a breaker.
