US Open: British contenders for grand slam glory at Flushing Meadows

Press Association Sport looks at the British contenders ahead of the US Open, which begins on Monday.

Five British players will fly the flag in singles at the US Open, which begins in New York on Monday.

Andy Murray, Kyle Edmund, Johanna Konta and Cameron Norrie were direct entrants while Heather Watson came through qualifying at Flushing Meadows.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at the British contenders, all of whom are available at enhanced odds with Sky Bet, who offer a Price Boost on every player in the outright market.

Andy Murray

Sky Bet Price Boost: 50/1

After a lot of pain, tears and several false starts, Murray is finally set to make his grand slam return. He has missed the last four major tournaments with his right hip problem, pulling out on the eve of last year's US Open and Wimbledon earlier this summer. His performances in Washington earlier this month showed he has lost none of his heart or desire and his movement is improving. Expectations should be realistic - just being on court is the main thing. Plays James Duckworth in the first round on Monday.

Kyle Edmund

Sky Bet Price Boost: 125/1

Having taken over from Murray as British number one, Edmund has established himself in the top 20 and has reserved his best performances for the grand slams. In his two previous main-draw appearances at the US Open, he has not lost before the third round, and being seeded gives him a theoretically easier draw. The 24-year-old, who faces Paolo Lorenzi of Italy on Monday, has struggled so far on the North American hard courts but enjoys the conditions at Flushing Meadows.

Cameron Norrie

Sky Bet Price Boost: 1500/1

Norrie has almost made professional tennis look easy since leaving college in Texas last spring. He raced into the top 100 and has not looked back, with the top 50 now in his sights. Norrie made a fine US Open debut 12 months ago, coming through qualifying and then winning his first grand slam match before falling in round two. A fine competitor and learning all the time. Plays Australian Jordan Thompson on Monday.

Johanna Konta

Sky Bet Price Boost: 66/1

Konta's preparations for the tournament were derailed by illness but she appears to be over the worst. Having seen her ranking drop outside the top 40, the 27-year-old is not seeded in New York, and faces a battle to progress beyond the first round after drawing sixth seed Caroline Garcia. Her form remains very up and down and she has won only two matches in her last four grand slam appearances but recent performances have largely been encouraging.

Heather Watson

Sky Bet Price Boost: 750/1

What was shaping up to be a thoroughly miserable season for Watson has taken an upward turn. With her ranking outside the top 100, the 26-year-old was forced to drop down to the second-tier ITF circuit and was rewarded with a final appearance in Vancouver earlier this month. Having never previously won a senior match on eight previous visits to Flushing Meadows, Watson was in fine form through three qualifying matches and will now bid for a first main draw win when she faces Russian Ekaterina Makarova on Monday.
