Roger Federer to open 2018 season at Hopman Cup in Perth

Roger Federer is to open his 2018 season at the Hopman Cup tournament in Perth.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion used the mixed team event as a warm-up for this season's Australian Open success and will return to Western Australia at the end of this year.

He will again team up with Belinda Bencic to represent Switzerland.

Federer said: “I’m very happy to be coming back because I had the best time on and off the court.

“The fans were absolutely amazing, there were I think about 6,000 people at my first practice which I couldn’t believe, it was almost surreal walking in to the stadium."

Seven other teams, yet to be announced, will compete at the event which takes place from December 30 to January 6.

Federer, who turns 36 in August, is currently preparing for Wimbledon, a tournament for which he is the bookies' favourite.
