World number one Judd Trump saw off Michael Holt 6-3 to move into the quarter-finals of the Players' Championship in Southport.
Trump opened up the first-round match with a clearance of 130 before edging 3-1 ahead of Holt, the 2020 Snooker Shoot Out champion, by the mid-session interval.
Holt, whose triumph in Watford last week over the short-format tournament was his first ranking title, reduced the deficit to 4-2 with a break of 128 and then trailed 5-3.
However, a run of 76 from the 'Ace in the Pack' saw Trump claim a decisive 10th frame to wrap up victory.
In Tuesday's other evening match, world number eight Kyren Wilson was defeated 6-2 by Chinese player Yan Bingtao.
Perry holds firm to beat Robertson
Joe Perry held off a fightback from Neil Robertson to win 6-4 and reach the quarter-finals of the Coral Players Championship.
Perry worked his way into a 5-1 lead in a tightly-contested match, before Robertson rattled off his second and third centuries of the match to get back into it at 5-3.
After the Australian won the next frame, the third in succession in which Perry had failed to contribute, it appeared as though a turnaround was on the cards.
But Perry, who won this event in 2015 before it was expanded, managed to turn the 10th frame into a scrap - one he was just about able to win thanks to a brave long blue followed by pink and black.
Robertson has been in fine form of late, winning twice and losing the final of the German Masters since he lost in the first round of the Masters, and in the main he looked in good form.
Indeed the 38-year-old bagged breaks of 140, 119, 127 and 84 to Perry's best of 68, but the Englishman won all the tight frames and that ultimately decided the outcome of the match.
"I felt alright - I know what Neil does, he pots long reds and makes hundreds, that's fine," said Perry when asked how concerned he was watching Robertson fight back.
Perry, who referenced an uncharacteristic missed red from Robertson in frame three as a key turning point, progresses to face Bingtao.
On the other table, John Higgins pulled clear of Graeme Dott to record an impressive 6-2 success.
The first four frames were shared between these in-form veterans, but Higgins improved a little after the interval to progress to a potential last-eight clash with Judd Trump, who plays Michael Holt this evening.
"I played a little bit better, but it could quite easily have been Graeme winning 6-2," said Higgins, who bemoaned the height of the second table and how that affected the overall quality of the match.
