Shaun Murphy and Kyren Wilson were early casualties as both suffered first-round defeats in the Northern Ireland Open on Monday.
World number six Murphy - fresh from his victory over Ronnie O'Sullivan in the Champion of Champions final eight days ago - was dumped out 4-1 by Chinese player Chen Zifan who is in his first season on the World Snooker Tour.
The 25-year-old raced into a 3-0 lead with breaks of 95 and 92 helping him outscore the former world champion 279-13 and although Murphy pulled one back with a run of 68 in the fourth, Chen won the next to reach the second round.
Wilson was beaten by the same score against Newcastle's world No 81 Sam Craigie, who was wearing glasses for the first time.
A break of 106 gave Craigie the opening frame, but Wilson - twice a ranking finalist this season - responded with a 105 to level. But then it was all 23-year-old Craigie who put together runs of 110, 88 and 81 to go through.
Kurt Maflin had the highest break of the day, a 140, as he beat Andrew Higginson 4-1 while the evergreen Jimmy White delighted a large Belfast crowd by edging out Dominic Dale 4-3.
Home favourite Mark Allen - the new world No 7 - was not at his fluent best but did enough to beat Sanderson Lam 4-2, while Adam Duffy progressed with a 4-2 win over Rory McLeod having made the event despite two missed flights.
Defending champion Mark King is safely into the next round with a 4-1 win over Matthew Bolton, having scored a 50 break in the third frame.
