SUNDAY REVIEW & MATCH STATS

Halifax 12-36 Widnes

Halifax tries: Heaton (51,59)
Goals: Tyrer (52), Murrell (60)

Widnes tries: Bridge (7), White (31), Runciman (37), Thompson (44,46), Mellor (74), Craven (78)
Goals: White (8,32,38,74)

Winger Corey Thompson scored two second-half tries as Widnes defeated Halifax 36-12 to put a first win towards their bid for Betfred Super League survival.

Thompson's double came as part of the Vikings' seven-try victory over their Kingstone Press Championship hosts, who have now lost both Middle 8s fixtures.

Denis Betts' side arrived at the Shay on the back of a five-game losing streak, including an opening qualifiers defeat to Warrington.

But apart from a brief spell midway through the second period, they always looked comfortable in pursuit of their first triumph since beating Leigh on June 22.

Hooker Lloyd White finished with 12 points from a try and four goals while Halifax winger Ben Heaton has now scored six tries in two losing efforts.

London Broncos 32-32 Featherstone Rovers

Broncos tries: Pitts (11), Kear (15), Barthau (17), Sammut (54), Ioane (57), Ackers (65)
Goals: Sammut (18,55,58,66)

Featherstone tries: Farrell (23), Davies (36,47), Briscoe (50,69), Ulugia (78)
Goals: Hardman (24,48,51,79)

Featherstone produced a brilliant comeback to secure a 32-32 draw against London Broncos in their Super 8s Qualifiers match in Ealing.

Ian Hardman held his nerve to kick a touchline conversion in the 79th minute as Rovers recovered from 32-22 behind to claim a point.

London raced into a 14-0 lead inside 17 minutes after Jay Pitts, Elliot Kear and William Barthau all crossed, but Rovers hit back either side of half-time through Connor Farrell, Luke Briscoe and John Davies' double.

The Broncos regrouped and Jarrod Sammut, Mark Ioane and Andy Ackers scored, the latter on his 100th career appearance, to give them a 10-point advantage with 11 minutes remaining.

But Briscoe dived over in the corner for his second and then Chris Ulugia found a hole in the home defence to score a try which Hardman converted to secure Featherstone something from a dramatic match.

SATURDAY REVIEW & MATCH STATS

Warrington 52-24 Catalans

Warrington tries: Ratchford (2,35), Russell (9), Patton (14), Atkins (28,50), Lineham (61,78), Hiku (64)
Goals: Patton (3,10,15,29,35,50,62,65)

Catalans tries: Casty (20), Inu (45,69), Tierney (55)
Goals: Walsh (20,46,56,70)

Warrington stand-off Declan Patton claimed a personal haul of 20 points as he inspired the Wolves to a 52-24 victory over the Catalans Dragons in the Super 8s Qualifiers at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Patton claimed a try and landed eight goals from nine attempts as well as creating tries for Ryan Atkins and Stefan Ratchford with some pinpoint kicking.

Ratchford, Atkins and Tom Lineham claimed two tries each for Warrington, with others coming from Matty Russell and Peta Hiku in a convincing win.

Warrington followed up their win over local rivals Widnes to make it two from two in the Qualifiers and will now be confident of taking their place back in Super League next season with four of their remaining five games being against Championship opposition.

It was a disappointing afternoon for the Dragons whose efforts were rewarded with two tries from Krisnan Inu, with Remi Casty and Lewis Tierney also touching down, and four goals from Luke Walsh.

Leigh 16-20 Hull KR

Leigh tries: Mortimer (14), Vea (69)
Goals: Drinkwater (14,39,51,70)

Hull KR tries: Lunt (31,76), Shaw (59)
Goals: Ellis (31,60,65,76)

In the day's Super 8 Qualifiers clash, Shaun Lunt scored twice as Championship side Hull KR upset Leigh Centurions, the team which replaced them in Super League this season.

The hooker went in for a try in each half - his second with just five minutes of the game remaining - to seal a memorable 20-16 win for the Robins.

But it was a former Leigh player Jamie Ellis who pulled the strings for Tim Sheens' side with an outstanding kicking game, which helped Hull KR control the second half.

FRIDAY REVIEW & MATCH STATS

Salford 4-23 Castleford

Salford try: Vatuvei (43)

Castleford tries: Hardaker (7,26), McShane (59), Hitchcox (64)
Goals: Gale (7,26,59)
Drop-Goals: Gale (75)

Castleford have one hand on the League Leader's Shield after Zak Hardaker inspired them to a vital 23-4 victory over Salford at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Full-back Hardaker scored two first-half tries for the Tigers and set up another after the break as they took full advantage of Leeds losing at Wakefield on Thursday to open up a commanding 10-point lead at the top of Betfred Super League.

St Helens 6-8 Hull FC

St Helens try: Grace (4)
Goal: Percival (4)

Hull FC try: Sneyd (35)
Goals: Sneyd (35,64)

Marc Sneyd hit a 50-metre penalty to bag the points for Hull in a low-quality game at St Helens.

The rain hammered down from the first minute to the last and it was the solo effort and game management of Sneyd that won it for the Challenge Cup finalists.

With the game on a knife-edge and the clock ticking down Hull took their opportunity to land a penalty from the halfway line, Saints turning down an easier opportunity minutes earlier which proved to be the difference between the sides.

The rain-soaked turf was the only obstacle Sneyd had to contend with and his effort was bang on target to give Lee Radford's men the opportunity to close the game out.

Wigan 18-4 Huddersfield

Wigan tries: Gelling (13), Farrell (36), Tomkins (79)
Goals: Powell (36,51), Tomkins (79)

Huddersfield try: McGillvary (10)

Wigan stayed in the hunt for a top-four finish with a hard-fought 18-4 triumph over Huddersfield to leapfrog their visitors in the table.

The Giants led a wet encounter 4-0 after Jermaine McGillvary picked up a loose ball from a Danny Brough kick, but the Warriors hit back through an Anthony Gelling score. It looked like it was going to be all square at half-time until George Williams' kick through was touched down by Liam Farrell.

The hosts then stretched their lead by two points in the second half through the boot of Sam Powell, and Sam Tomkins rubbed salt in Huddersfield's wounds with a late try.

Both teams had early chances to score with Darnell McIntosh going close for the Giants, while Joe Burgess was denied a score in the corner for Wigan thanks to a hit from McGillvary.

Saturday sees the continuation of the Super League qualifiers and a clash between outright favourites Warrington (1/3) and closest rivals Catalans (5/1).

THURSDAY REVIEW & MATCH STATS

Wakefield 38-6 Leeds

Wakefield tries: Arundel (4), Jones-Bishop (26), Wood (28), Miller (39), Ashurst (51), Tupou (76)
Goals: Finn (4,26,28,36,39,51,76)

Leeds try: Cuthbertson (10)
Goal: Watkins (10)

Jacob Miller enjoyed a dream comeback as Wakefield boosted their fading play-off hopes with a 38-6 rout of West Yorkshire rivals Leeds at Belle Vue.

Trinity, one of the season's surprise packages, had fallen away in recent weeks but they returned to form in style against an out-of-sorts Rhinos.

Miller had been a big miss for Wakefield during their poor run but his return from a broken leg was key to Chris Chester's side climbing back into the top four.

Joe Arundel's early effort set the tone for a dominant first-half performance by Wakefield as further tries from Ben Jones-Bishop, Scott Grix and Miller gave them a 26-6 lead at the break.

Adam Cuthbertson's 10th-minute leveller was all Leeds had to show from a nightmare opening 40 minutes and it got little better for the Rhinos after the break, with Matty Ashurst and Bill Tupou completing Wakefield's biggest Super League win over their neighbours.
