Addition of blinkers reignited his spark as he landed Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival (3m, soft) in March. Needed comeback run and much improved with headgear back on when chasing home Strong Leader in a Grade 2 at Newbury (24.2f) 37 days ago. Leading contender back in a handicap.

Landed 3 of his first 4 starts at Cartmel this term and followed up with some solid efforts. Took the wrong course when contesting Cross Country at Cheltenham, pulling up, before again failing to complete at Sandown (pulled-up, 28.7f, soft) 29 days ago. Back over hurdles today but has won over C&D.

Did well in staying handicap hurdles, winning this race last year (2-2 over C&D) thanks to a remarkable sit from jockey. Progressing nicely over fences (second at Cheltenham last month) but connections understandably tempted by decent pot here and is very much respected on his return to hurdles.

Dans Le Vent9
Age: 12|  Weight: 10-8| J: Isabel Williams(3)| T: Evan Williams| OR:  125
Promising comeback this term before below-par run at Haydock in November. Much better when third of 8 in handicap hurdle at Chepstow (23.6f, good to soft, 16/1) 9 days ago, relishing the step up in trip. Up 2 lb for that effort but still 12 lb below his last winning mark, albeit he is a veteran now.

Very much on the up for his new yard, 3 wins in his last 5 and good effort again on latest start, chasing home progressive horse of Dan Skelton when third of 8 at Southwell (24.3f, soft) 33 days ago. Stuck to his task well that day but this looks a tougher race and he'll need a career-best here.

Fourteen runs since last win but decent third at Chepstow (23.6f, good) on final outing last term. Encouraging return from 8-months off when second of 9 (clear of third) in a handicap at Sandown (23.4f, heavy) 29 days ago, not given hard time once chance had gone. Entitled to build on that run.

Shaped encouragingly after 5 months off when second at Fontwell (17.7f, good) in September, Disappointed at Warwick in November but left that behind when stepped up in trip (24.4f) at Doncaster 22 days ago, keeping on well to score. Not many miles on the clock and unexposed over staying trips.

Useful recruit from France but laboured effort at Bangor on British debut, but back on track on second start when fourth at Doncaster (16.5f). Flattered by second at Hereford (19.7f) last month but did rally late on, so tries staying trip today. Bit to find and could be one for fences down the line.

Age: 7|  Weight: 10-2| J: Lewis Stones(3)| T: O Murphy| OR:  118
Two wins in November, got off the mark in 6-runner novice hurdle at Hereford (19.7f) before claiming a walk over. Another step forward when scoring on handicap debut at Uttoxeter (23.3f, soft) headed and rallied to lead late on. 1 lb out of handicap but lightly-raced sort represents red-hot stable.

Forecasts

Transmission (7/2), Monmiral (5/1), Kilbarry Hill (11/2), Cloud Dancer (6/1), Craven Bay (15/2), Up For Parol (15/2), Dans Le Vent (8/1), Lemoncello (10/1), Tommie Beau (12/1)

Verdict

A winner at last year's Cheltenham Festival and second in a Grade 2 already this season, MONMIRAL could have too much class for these back in handicap company. With rain forecast the conditions are likely to be testing and he's shown he can cope with plenty of juice in the ground, as has Transmission who landed this race when it was soft underfoot last year. Cloud Dancer is unexposed over staying trips and he can get in the money.
