Second in last year's Ayr Gold Cup and underlined he's a force in top handicaps when runner-up in the Victoria Cup at Ascot (7f) in May. Hasn't hit the same heights at Group 3 level since but enters the reckoning back in a handicap.

Returned to form with Saint-Cloud success for new yard in May and built on that when an excellent second of 25 in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot. All ground seems to come alike to him. High on the shortlist.

Lightly raced 6-y-o who has improved for the application of a visor this year, including a win in a valuable 6f AW handicap at Newcastle on Good Friday. Respectable fourth of 11 in Group 3 back at Newcastle in June but well held in big-field handicaps at Ascot either side of it.

Smart AW performer who has shown he's just as good on turf over 5f at Ascot in recent weeks, finishing a promising second before getting up in the dying strides to land a nice prize last weekend. Carries a 6 lb penalty for that but still respected.

Winless since 2022 but he was a good 1½ lengths second of 11 to reopposing Lethal Levi in handicap at Newbury (6f, good to firm) in May. Down the field in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot since, though.

Not the most straightforward but he took his form to another level in first-time headgear when 33/1 winner of Palace House at Newmarket (5f, good) in April. Respectable third in Temple at Haydock next time but down the field in the King Charles at Royal Ascot since. A career best will be needed.

Most likeable and reliable sprinter on the whole who was runner-up in the Wokingham and this race last season. As good as ever when placed in handicaps at Newmarket/Epsom on first 2 starts this year and a rare off day at Sandown last time can be forgiven.

Looked firmly on the up when bagging two 5f handicaps at Newcastle in February. Has found it tougher in stronger races over 6f since but he wasn't given an unduly hard time back from a break in the Wokingham latterly and it's too soon to suggest he can't mix it in big-field handicaps.

Off the mark for new yard at Ascot (6f) in May. Showed he can mix it in big-field handicaps when fifth of 25 in the Wokingham back at Ascot. Not so good in cheekpieces (quickly discarded) latest but his yard's very good form at present and fine recent record in this provide hope for better now.

Verdict

PUROSANGUE would be running off 4 lb higher had the handicapper been able to reassess him for this after Sandown. The ground is unlikely to be as soft as it was on that occasion but this son of Aclaim has winning form on quicker ground and gets the vote ahead of Wokingham runner-up Dark Trooper. Glenfinnan wasn't too far behind Dark Trooper in the Wokingham and Michael Dods has his team in excellent form so he's also shortlisted along with Billyjoh and Ramazan.
