Winner of 2m handicap on sole previous visit here in December 2022 and went on to finish a fine second in Martin Pipe at last season's Cheltenham Festival. However, reappearance/chase debut at Newbury was inauspicious and followed that with another low-key display back in this sphere last month.

Decisive winner of this race 12 months but bids for a reapeat off 7 lb higher in a stronger renewal this time round. Furthermore, he has failed to make an impact both completed starts so far this season.

Better than ever when winning Sandown handicap last spring and reappearance second at Uttoxeter in October was no backward step. Held when falling 2 out at Newton Abbot next time but step up to 26.5f on deep ground was probably too much of a test and trip/ground here will be more suitable.

Useful chaser in France and built on his first run for this yard when justifying support in style in an 11-runner handicap hurdle at Lingfield (19.5f, good to soft). Runner-up under a penalty at Exeter since and this 5-y-o has to enter calculations.

Bumper winner who landed first 2 starts over hurdles last term and enhanced his form when second in Grade 2 on reappearance at Chepstow. Creditable third in an Aintree handicap (2½m, heavy) last time and he's not without each-way hope.

10/1
Lightly-raced hurdler who was bagging his third win in 19f handicap at Warwick in November. Has followed that with a couple of solid efforts in defeat, latterly in second place when falling at the final flight at Sandown last month. Should make his presence felt if none the worse for that tumble.

Two wins in his juvenile season and got his head back in front when stepped up to 19f at Taunton in December. showing a potent turn of foot. However, he came up short over this C&D next time and is likely to again find several too strong.

Forecasts

Joker De Mai (11/4), Samuel Spade (7/2), Resplendent Grey (4/1), Mark Of Gold (9/2), Largy Poet (5/1), Sea Invasion (6/1), Pentland Hills (7/1), No Ordinary Joe (17/2), Lord Of Cheshire (10/1), Get A Tonic (12/1), Fantastic Lady (12/1), Boombawn (16/1), West To The Bridge (25/1), Up For Parol (25/1), In From The Cold (33/1)

Verdict

Chris Gordon saddled the winner of this in 2022 and in SEA INVASION the yard fields an intriguing candidate this time round. The 6-y-o took a step forward when fourth in a maiden here on Boxing Day, form which is working out well (second and third both won since), and he promises to be suited by this stiffer test now pitched into a handicap. Top-weight Pentland Hills will be a big threat if able to build on his encouraging reappearance, while Largy Poet and Joker de Mai are also key players.
