Not at his best on first 2 outings this term but benefited from a step back up in trip (as well as a first-time visor) when winning veterans' series final at Warwick (3m, soft) in January. Fared as well as could be expected when fourth in Grade 2 Denman at Newbury since.

Winner of the Grand Sefton at Aintree last season and added to tally in 19.5f Chepstow handicap on return in October. Creditable third in Old Roan at Aintree next time but wasn't at his best when filling the same position at Cheltenham on New Year's Day. Represents last year's winning connections.

Has added to his good Cheltenham record with placed efforts in 3 very competitive handicaps this winter. Consistent type from top stable but isn't certain to benefit from the step up to 3m.

Fairly useful hurdles winner who has shown improved form switched to fences, winning back-to-back handicaps last season before resuming her progress when scoring decisively over C&D in December. Creditable third in a 3m Grade 2 mares' hurdle at Doncaster since.

Snapped a near 2-year losing run when gaining the third Kempton chase success of his career over this trip 6 weeks ago. 3 lb higher in a stronger race now but his record here affords him respect (second in this last year).

Continued his progress when landing the Badger Beer on his Wincanton reappearance in November. Much better than the result when fifth of 8 at Sandown 3 weeks ago, every chance when bad mistake 2 out. Has first-time blinkers added to his tongue tie now. It's likely he's still on a good mark.

Progressive chaser who won over 3m at Doncaster in December and improved again when only narrowly denied in the competitive Great Yorkshire back there 6 weeks later. Remains of interest up 4 lb and completes a strong team in this for the Anthony Honeyball yard.

Dual novice hurdle winner and better form in defeat over fences last season, including runner-up in valuable handicap at Aintree final start. Better effort this term when fifth of 12 at Cheltenham (20.5f) 4 weeks ago and his yard's flying form in February provides hope he can step forward again.

Won over hurdles/fences at Plumpton last season. Improved when second of 8 over 22.5f at Newbury in December. Tackles 3m for the first time now.

C&D winner last February before finishing fifth in this race. Best effort this season when third of 7 over C&D 15 days ago. No reason why he won't give his running but a couple of others look better handicapped.

Made a winning chase debut at Cheltenham in November 2022. Running well when twice departing at the final fence at Ascot this season but his 19 lengths fifth to Tweed Skirt over C&D at the Christmas meeting was a below-par effort. Has undergone wind surgery since.

Grand servant to connections, including a win in this in 2022, but he's very hard to fancy on recent efforts. 8 lb out of the handicap.

Forecasts

Bowtogreatness (4/1), Blackjack Magic (4/1), Forward Plan (15/2), Flegmatik (15/2), Il Ridoto (15/2), Killer Kane (8/1), Lord Baddesley (10/1), Tweed Skirt (12/1), Sam Brown (14/1), Unanswered Prayers (22/1), Al Dancer (28/1), Cap Du Nord (28/1)

Verdict

BLACKJACK MAGIC has shown enough the last twice to think he's still on a good mark if he can eliminate late jumping errors and can lead home an Anthony Honeyball 1-2 ahead of Great Yorkshire runner-up Forward Plan. Ben Pauling has his team in flying form and Bowtogreatness could also have a big say having shaped as if coming to hand when fifth in the traditionally-strong Timeform novice handicap at Cheltenham last month.
