Hard to predict but he won the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury on return in 2021. Also runner-up in the Kim Muir here in 2021 so this veteran can't be discounted if on his A-game.

Made a very good start over fences last term, landing a Grade 2 Wetherby novice in February, and he signed off with a good third in handicap chase at Ayr (24.1f, good). Much less exposed than these so he merits serious consideration now stepping up in trip.

Progressed into a useful staying chaser last season, winning 3 of his last 4 starts. Pulled up over hurdles here on his reappearance but should be a lot sharper for that so he's one to consider back chasing.

A regular in big-field staying handicaps and he ended a losing run dating back to the Midlands National in 2020 when bagging 3m4f Ffos Las handicap in April. No forlorn hope on his seasonal return.

Looked a stayer still firmly on the up when adding the Southern National to his CV at Fontwell in November but not in the same form both starts after. Returns after a wind op now and certainly not one to be writing off.

A three-time course winner but he was pulled up in handicap chase at Listowel (24f, soft) on his return in September. No surprise to see him get back on track round here though.

Developed into a useful staying handicap chaser in 2022/23, winning twice, and he resumed his progress when landing 3m handicap chase at Carlisle 31 days ago. That form is working out well so he's not taken lightly despite a 7 lb rise.

Progressed well over fences last season and gained a third success in 3m4f handicap chase at Downpatrick in April. Looked in need of the run back hurdling for her return when 11th at Punchestown and she can take a sizeable step forward here. Interesting Irish challenger.

A fairly useful winning Irish chaser but only seventh of 10 in handicap hurdle at Listowel (24f, soft) 60 days ago. Back over fences and no forlorn hope for good yard.

Winning hurdler who made the frame on all of his five runs over fences last term. Back after breathing surgery and he merits consideration.

Got off the mark over fences in Stratford in April and he caught the eye after 6 months off when a running-on fourth of 12 in handicap chase at Plumpton (25.7f, good to soft) 13 days ago. Very much one to consider off an unchanged mark.

Forecasts

City Chief (4/1), Malina Girl (11/2), Dom Of Mary (13/2), Flash Collonges (7/1), Guetapan Collonges (8/1), Rose Of Arcadia (8/1), First Lord De Cuet (9/1), Cloudy Glen (11/1), Wayfinder (12/1), Truckers Lodge (18/1), Peaches And Cream (20/1), Bangers And Cash (22/1), Slipway (22/1), Captain Cattistock (28/1)

Verdict

CITY CHIEF made a bright start to chasing last season, winning Wetherby's Grade 2 Towton Chase, and he is fancied to capilalise on a handy-looking mark and resume winning ways with this longer trip a likely plus too for Nicky Henderson's son of Soldier of Fortune. Malina Girl also looks to have better days ahead of her and Gavin Cromwell's raider is feared most, although Guetapan Collonges and Dom of Mary both merit consideration too in a cracking handicap.
