Signed off productive novice hurdle campaign last season by landing a Kelso handicap. Well held on return/chase debut following a wind op here (23.4f), but likely to make his mark in this sphere.

Multiple hurdles winner last term and was faced with an insufficient test on return/chase debut (19.4f on fast ground) at Chepstow. Better expected now up in trip on a slower surface.

Progressive novice hurdler last season, winning twice, and promising start to chase career when going down narrowly in 2½m Uttoxeter novices handicap (heavy). Big player here with improvement likely.

Irish point winner who won twice from 5 starts over hurdles last term. Chase debut here was encouraging and while he failed to build on that next time, it's still early days. Cheekpieces applied.

11/1
Dual point winner/25f hurdles winner who out jumped his rivals to make a winning chase debut at Exeter (24.2f) last month. This is more demanding, but should make his presence felt all the same.

Hurdles winner who made a bright start fences when landing a 2½m Lingfield handicap in October. Jumping lacked fluency at Fontwell last time, but claims if able to get back on track here.

Bought for £150,000 after finishing second in an Irish point. 2-4 over hurdles last season (excuses in a Sandown handicap on latest start in March) and couldn't rule out on this chase debut.

Forecasts

Fern Hill (11/4), Patroclus (11/4), Flash Collonges (4/1), Sopran Thor (7/1), Valleres (15/2), Rapper (8/1), Beatthebullet (11/1), Grumpy Charley (12/1)

Verdict

Cases can be made for the majority of these, but FERN HILL's claims are the most persuasive on the back of his most promising chase debut near miss at Uttoxeter. Beatthebullet and Sopran Thor have already won over fences but bigger threats may be posed by Grumpy Charley and Flash Collonges, both of whom can be expected to leave their chase debut efforts well behind. Valleres also warrants respect.

  1. FERN HILL (IRE)
  2. GRUMPY CHARLEY
  3. FLASH COLLONGES (FR)
