Really smart at best, including second in Hardwicke at this meeting last year. Below par since, including on C&D reappearance, but wouldn't be a shock if he revives now dipping into a handicap.

Improving handicapper who was completing a hat-trick when just clinging on in a small field at Newmarket last time. More needed in this much deeper race but further progress would come as no surprise.

Smart handicapper who had a productive 2020, winning 5 times. Creditable fourth of 15 in competitive event at York's Dante meeting latest. Should give another good account.

Back on the up and arguably unlucky not to win when second over 1¼m at the Curragh last time, staying on after meeting trouble over 2f out. Capable of having a say.

Useful middle-distance stayer who has been back to form for his new stable when third in Nottingham listed and second (Win O'clock fourth) in York handicap on last 2 outings.

Largely progressive at 3 and took it up another notch to win a valuable Australian handicap in March. Worth forgiving a lesser run in a Group 1 there since. Respected.

Won this off a 4 lb lower mark last year but the handicapper has largely looked in control since. Recent hurdle efforts no more than respectable and suspicion he'll be vulnerable on follow-up attempt.

Second to progressive Flyin' Solo on Newbury reappearance, then bolted up when stepped back up to 1½m at Newmarket since. Raised 13 lb but could be plenty more to come from this lightly-raced sort.

Useful Flat performer, including second in 1¼m 3-y-o handicap at this meeting last year. Took well to hurdling earlier in the year and ran respectably on AW Flat return in April. Ryan Moore up.

Improved performer for this yard since coming over from Ireland, making it 3 wins in 4 starts when leading near the finish at Chester (1¼m, good to soft) 6 weeks ago. Raised another 4lb.

Low-mileage 4-y-o who was much too good for his 5 rivals on his Haydock reappearance 20 days ago. The handicapper hasn't missed him with a 13 lb rise but it's highly likely he has more to offer.

C&D winner. Visored first time, creditable third of 7 in handicap at Thirsk on reappearance in April but a fair bit more will be needed in this much deeper race.

Useful performer in France but not enough in his 2 runs for this yard last month to fancy him strongly here unless a first-time tongue strap makes a big difference.

Lightly-raced 5-y-o who made a promising return when sixth of 15 in 1½m handicap at York last month, leading until over 1f out. Looks to have more to offer and weighted to have a big say.

Verdict

A very good renewal, featuring a few who could be ahead of their marks, none more so than AADDEEY who hacked up when returned to this trip at Newmarket last time and could have plenty more to offer. Quickthorn is another who is progressing at a rate of knots and he's feared most after last month's Haydock romp. Sam Cooke and Valyrian Steel are next on the list.
