Group 1 winner. Very classy sprinter on his day and just did a bit too much too soon in this race last year when forced to make the running. Back at his best when winning a Group 2 at Haydock last time in good fashion and goes on any ground.

Won this race last year and ideally suited to a stiff 5f. In fine form at Meydan this winter, winning each of his three races including the Group 1 Al Quoz sprint. While probably at his best on fast ground, not one to underestimate.

Won a New Zealand Group 1 earlier in the year (6f), a second success in that race but well beaten at Sha Tin when last seen in tougher company. This looks a tough ask on all known form.

Narrowly denied by Mabs Cross at Newmarket last month but may struggle to reverse that form now worse off at the weights. Wants fast ground to be seen at his best.

Won a 5f sprint in a fast time at Gulfstream Park in March and followed up with an impressive success at Keeneland up in Group 2 company, winning with a bit in hand. Has won on soft and looks a live player provided he handles this stiff 5f.

Won back-to-back races last year including a Group 3 at Sandown but he hasn't shown he's up to this level and well beaten when getting weight from Mabs Cross at Newmarket last time.

Group 3 winner in Australia and got her head back in front in Listed class at Doomben (5f) in December. Much more needed up at this level though.

Good third in this last year and only narrowly beaten in the Nunthorpe before an impressive Abbaye success in October. Produced a big run at the weights to defy several of these at Newmarket on return and worth forgiving her Haydock run last time.

Group 3 winner at Newmarket (5f) last year and landed a Listed race at Navan on return. Beaten favourite behind Mabs Cross last time though and worse off at the weights here; others preferred.

Very speedy two-year-old in 2018 and only beaten a neck in the Abbaye. May have needed the return run at York and rates as a fascinating contender back in at the deep end here, though a stiff finish with cut in the ground might not be ideal.

Won four of her five starts as a juvenile including the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. Below par in two runs this year though (both at 1m) and second string on jockey bookings. Drop in trip in her favour at least.

Dual Group 2 winner who was only narrowly denied in a Group 1 at Deauville in August. Disappointing in two runs this year though and needs to find plenty for the fitting of first-time blinkers.

Forecasts

Battaash (2/1), Blue Point (5/2), Mabs Cross (6/1), Imprimis (7/1), Sergei Prokofiev (12/1), Soldier's Call (16/1), Fairyland (16/1), Equilateral (20/1), Houtzen (33/1), Signora Cabello (66/1), Enzo's Lad (66/1), Judicial (66/1)

Verdict

The three who filled the places in this race last year all have solid claims and it might be worth taking a chance on MABS CROSS. She's progressed since finishing third in this race last year, winning the Abbaye in the interim and she gets a useful swing in the weights with Battaash who got the better of her at his favourite track, Haydock, last time. Battaash wasn't at his best in this last year when forced to make his own running and warrants respect provided he can get a tow in to the race. Blue Point is a class act but he seems at his best on a rattling quick surface so preference is for Imprimis as far as the places are concerned. He makes most appeal from the international runners.
  1. Mabs Cross
  2. Battaash
  3. Imprimis
