Down the field in this last year but started not beaten far twice here for new yard in valuable Royal Hunt Cup (1m) and International (7f) before defeating Cape Byron latest at Goodwood (7f). Had a break since but again should go well if right side.

Classy, precocious two-year-old has won just once this season in a Listed race back in June. Six starts since have been quite mixed but handicap probably high enough judged on latest C&D 17th of 20 to Ripp Orf.

Tackles 7f for the first time since 2016 and all seven career wins over 6f. Been in good form overall winning at Hamilton followed by fifth in the Stewards Cup before heavy ground found him out in Ayr Gold Cup. Career high mark and trip against him.

Close up in big field handicaps the last three times chasing home rivals here in last two over 7f with second to Flaming Spear at Goodwood and Ripp Orf over C&D. Better off with each so could easily turn the tables and rates a leading player.

Won once this season at Haydock over 1m but several other good efforts over both 7f and 1m in valuable handicaps. Still 7lb higher than Haydock so appeals more for place purposes at present.

C&D Listed winner at two on soft ground missed 13 months then before starting with a good second at Thirsk. Lesser efforts next twice although Group Three latest a tall order. Will need more than we've seen so far this season.

Eighth in this last year but only won four compared to 14 placed efforts including three of last four. Third in a valuable York handicap when fancied and since has been third at Sandown and second at Chelmsford off this mark. Sure to be thereabouts.

C&D winner of a considerably weaker handicap last October but not win since. Followed good second here over 1m with fourths at Chester over 7½f and here over 1m. Handicapper still has a tight hold so more likely to place than win.

7f Epsom Listed winner in June on soft ground but out of luck in eight subsequent starts. Third to Flaming Spear at Goodwood and next at Chester before lesser run latest at Doncaster. Bounce back needed but yard's runners often do.

Had been in good form with a hat-trick of big field handicap thirds until getting bogged down last time in heavy ground in the Ayr Gold Cup. Only had a handful of 7f starts and mixed messages there stamina wise but capable if he does last it out.

Won six of his 17 starts, all this season. Decent fourths at Goodwood (behind Flaming Spear) and Chelmsford before shade disappointing here when 12th of 20 behind Ripp Orf although may have gone too fast there.

Ran on for eighth beaten 3¼L behind Ripp Orf in penultimate start and again passed beaten horses when eighth of 33 in the Cambridgeshire (1m1f) latest. Gets 2lb back so not totally out of it but again fear he will get too far adrift early on.

Loves big field handicaps and especially over C&D where he has landed two valuable pots as well as finishing a close third of 27 in another this season. Beat Cape Byron among others here before close fourth latest at Newmarket. Leading player.

7f York winner this season has twice chased home Ripp Orf over C&D this season but finished ahead of that rival latest at Newmarket when a good second. Gets in off the same mark here so has to be considered once again.

Won back to back races at Epsom (6f) and Newmarket (7f) in June but not rediscovered that level in two races since a break. Well behind Flaming Spear at Goodwood and in Ayr Gold Cup next so bit to prove here.

Forecasts

Cape Byron (7/2), Raising Sand (5/1), Flaming Spear (5/1), Ripp Orf (6/1), Il Primo Sole (7/1), Raydiance (10/1), Shady Mccoy (12/1), Firmament (12/1), Escobar (14/1), Gilgamesh (14/1), Good Effort (16/1), Vale Of Kent (20/1), Aces (20/1), Growl (20/1), Above The Rest (20/1), Lake Volta (25/1), Cardsharp (33/1), George Bowen (33/1)

Verdict

There would be few more deserving winners of a big handicap than CAPE BYRON and having ran excellent seconds to Ripp Orf (5lb better off with that rival) and Flaming Spear (3lb better off) he can finally have his moment with the weights now in his favour. Unexposed Il Primo Sole from the all-conquering John Gosden yard could easily be better than this mark and makes most appeal of the low drawn runners while course specialist Ripp Orf could again be best of the high drawn runners.
  1. Cape Byron

  3. Ripp Orf
