Left Simon Crisford for 50,000gns in November 2017, initially continuing to run well for this trainer (1m Lingfield winner in January); not quite at that level of form since his return from a break, but does drop down from Class 2 company latest.

16L winner at Yarmouth in June 2017 (1m, good to soft), but well beaten on both subsequent starts in this grade (Class 3); off since September 2017, so it'll represent a fine training performance is he proves to be the solution.

Kept good form on the AW over the winter and carried that over into the first few weeks of the turf season with back-to-back 7f wins at Doncaster and Catterick (with cut); vulnerable off this mark in this grade on first run over 1m.

AW specialist (3 from 7) and stablemate of Intrude; well beaten on return from a break on turf at Epsom latest, but better judged on his earlier Class 3 C&D win from a 4lb lower mark.

6lb above her last winning AW mark (1m Class 4 at Newcastle in February), but has came up short in Class 3 races since and races from a stiff looking perch from the widest draw in stall number 14.

14/1
C&D winner from a 2lb lower mark in March, and whilst generally running to a solid level of form since (regularly finishing just outside of the places), looks likely to come up short again despite an obvious affinity with Chelmsford.

50% AW strike rate (2 from 4), but now 10lb higher than when a ready 3¾L 7f winner here in March and inconsistent on turf since (including a couple of rather dismal efforts); trainer doubly represented.

Sights lowered (ran in the Group 3 Craven Stakes on his penultimate start) and switched back to the AW from a mark which is 2lb above when finishing a short-head second to Book Of Dreams over C&D in March; AW record: 1,1,4,2.

Gradually lost his way since a fine start to the season which included a C&D Class 4 win (beat Sir Hamilton by a short-head); might appreciate the drop in grade, but still 3lb above his last winning mark; trainer doubly represented.

Easing mark helpful and is a two-time course winner, yet still 10lb above his Class 5 C&D win in March 2017 and although a dual turf winner since then, he needs to produce more than he has done so far in 2018.

Won just once in 16 starts (6f soft, Newbury) and that was on his racecourse debut way back in September 2016; 0 from 4 on the AW (last twice over C&D), so hard to enthuse over despite a falling mark.

Left Richard Fahey for 28,000gns after winning at Newcastle (1m2f) in October 2017, and followed up on stable debut over C&D in December; just 2lb higher here making his first start since early January after undergoing wind surgery.

Stablemate of Bullingdon and is a similar type (an improving 3yo); twice a winner over this kind of trip including on Tapeta at Wolverhampton; he's now 5lb above his last winning mark; enjoys racing prominently.

Forecasts

Maypole (3/1), Bullingdon (4/1), Cliffs Of Capri (8/1), Able Jack (10/1), Sir Hamilton (12/1), Ifubelieveindreams (12/1), Glory Awaits (14/1), Kenstone (14/1), Book of Dreams (20/1), Right Action (20/1), Aquarium (25/1), The Eagle's Nest (33/1), Executive Force (33/1), Intrude (33/1)

Verdict

A decent prize, which has drawn the competitive field that it deserves. Richard Hannon looks to have targeted this race with a pair of improving three-year-old's, with both Maypole and BULLINGDON potential major players. The former will surely help to force the pace and that's a difficult task against some battle-hardened handicappers with previous C&D winning form, so the Pat Dobbs ridden Bullingdon makes more appeal. He's made an encouraging start to his career (C&D winner), and he went down fighting in a three-way tussle with Ulshaw Bridge and the luckless Al Jellaby in a strong race at Doncaster last week.
  1. Bullingdon
  2. Sir Hamilton
  3. Glory Awaits
