Enjoyed a good novices' campaign with wins at 2m3f/2m4f, the latter a Grade 2. Appeared as good as ever when trying his best to shake off Whisper at Kempton in a two-runner affair on his return to action. Acts on heavy and a leading player.

5/1
Grade 2 hurdle winner who goes well on heavy and whose trainer has made no secret of how highly he rates him. Won in spite of his jumping on reappearance at Ayr earlier in the month. Will need more fluency to beat this field but not ruled out.

Looked potentially smart in first season over fences, winning twice at Kelso (including Listed, 2m7½f, heavy). Pulled up in Scottish National when last seen and dropped in trip for this return. Will need an honest gallop to be seen to best effect.

Competitive from marks around 140 without winning in handicap hurdles last season. Returned with an 11L win on chase debut at Wetherby (1m7f, soft). Steps back up in trip and nicely treated at weights here. Would not have to improve to have claims.

Won a hurdle here over 2m3f in 2015 and goes well on heavy. Runner-up in C&D novices' chase last year but unable to win over fences until romping home by 18L at Aintree last month (3m1f). Bit to find but under a positive ride he could get involved.

Big Rivert28
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-11| J: D R Fox| T: Miss Lucinda V Russell| OR:  144
9/2
Progressive handicap hurdler last season who wound up winning at Kelso (3m2f, heavy) by 10L from a mark of 132. Made a good start over fences back there (2m7½f) last time and best in at the weights here, so has to be taken seriously.

Forecasts

Clan Des Obeaux (3/1), Vintage Clouds (3/1), Born Survivor (4/1), Big River (9/2), Cyrus Darius (5/1), Seldom Inn (20/1)

Verdict

Another terrific contest in prospect here where some sort of case can be made for all the field. A quick peek at the records reveals that, at 7-2, last year's winner Politologue was the longest-priced winner in the six runnings of this contest, while his trainer Paul Nicholls has trained all the last five winners, with Sue Smith taking the other. Therefore, Vintage Clouds merits respect despite this shorter trip and both he and Seldom Inn will want this to be a real test to bring their proven stamina into play. If that is the case then the well-treated Born Survivor will be under a bit of pressure, but Big River will be doing his best work at the business end and could go well. Nonetheless, we revert to Nicholls for the selection in CLAN DES OBEAUX, who should see this out has potential for further improvement.
