4½L runner-up to Coo Star Sivola in a Listed Cheltenham contest (2m4f, good to soft) on New Year's Day earning a mark of 135 over hurdles, but his pedigree has always suggested that chasing would be his forte. Fascinating prospect.

Useful in bumpers and novice hurdles, winning over as far as 2m6f at Newcastle in March. Tends to get distressed post race (heat stress), and did so after that success, but back fresh now for chasing. Bumper winner at this track.

Finished in midfield in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, and was aimed high enough after showing stamina in spades when scoring over 2m at Lingfield in January (heavy). Rules chasing debut.

Brought along steadily over hurdles to score in a Ludlow maiden in February (2m5½f soft), and fairly solid in handicaps since without winning (twice a runner up). Others likely slightly stronger on chasing debut.

Couldn't have been any more impressive against mediocre opposition on her chasing debut in a demolition job at Cartmel in May (2m5f good to soft), but hit the deck at Hexham on her next start in June. Tough, but needs to bounce back.

Won back to back novice hurdles here this time last year (2m1f and 2m4f), but steadily lost his way thereafter. Back to form when taking a 2m Bangor handicap hurdle last month, but back over fences now (not keen on sole previous attempt).

No stranger to testing ground having raced in France, and at Ffos Las on UK debut (finished third). Off since finishing 17L third to classy Flat recruit Beyond Conceit at Newbury in January, but likely to race prominently on chasing debut.

Didn't make too much noise when folding tamely on his final start of the season at Towcester in April, but that was probably attributable to the fast ground. Better with cut, but plenty of improvement needed on his chasing debut.

Well suited by cut in the ground and hacked up on his chasing debut at Perth in August (2m4f soft). Kept busy since then and lost nothing in defeat when edged out by the exciting Bigirononhiship at Hexham (2m4f soft) latest.

Finally off the mark over fences at Down Royal in May (2m4f good to firm), but not looked at his sharpest since joining current connections for £9,000, and whilst falling in the weights has seemingly little to offer at present.

Forecasts

Beau Bay (11/4), Dubai Angel (4/1), Crievehill (11/2), Report To Base (6/1), Derintoher Yank (9/1), Elusive Theatre (9/1), Joueur Bresilien (11/1), Town Parks (20/1), Yorgonnahearmeroar (28/1), Swantykay (100/1)

Verdict

Beau Bay arrives fit and in form off the back of a solid effort at Hexham when chasing home the potentially useful northern staying handicap chaser Bigirononhiship. His handicap mark remains untouched and he has Richard Johnson in the saddle off a light-weight so should be knocking on the door. However, there are a few other interesting runners in the race including the chasing newcomers Joueur Bresilien, Crievehill, Dubai Angel and REPORT TO BASE. The selection cost £85,000 in April 2016, and despite showing plenty over hurdles (including in Listed company at Cheltenham) has always appealed as a future chaser. A half-brother to both Surtee Du Berlais and the likeable hunter chaser Rosie Du Berlais, the future promises to be bright for Evan Williams charge.
