Solitary win from 18 previous starts over hurdles came from a 3lb higher mark last May. Handles and undulating surface and no issue with trip or ground, so decent place claims at least if not anchored by top weight.

Goes well here and suited by a good test. On a handy mark too; but recent form has been very ordinary and needs to post a much better effort than he out in over 2m5f last time out. Possible the slight drop in trip is not ideal.

Windy Writer145
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-9| J: Jonathan England| T: S England| OR:  94

Relatively unexposed but seemed to lose his way for his former yard; now has a prove on debut for a new trainer and probably best watched.

Respectable efforts of late and has some decent course form to his name. Disappointing favourite last time out but reasonable chance of atoning in this modest company. One for the shortlist.

Solid effort here last time out (Ever So Much held on a a literal reading) and may have plenty more to offer. Stable's runners always respected at this course and the lightly raced four-year-old has to merit serious consideration at this level.

Been in good form of late and the switch in tactics to make the running paid dividends last time out at Perth. Respected here under just a 4lb higher mark (almost negated as the rider is able to use his 3lb claim this time). Another to bear in mind.

Stable had a couple of options for this race, so noteworthy he flies the flag for the yard. Unexposed over hurdles and has a bit more to offer. But worth bearing in mind he was well backed latest at Carlisle but jumping let him down close to home.

Mileva Roller9
Age: 5|  Weight: 10-12| J: B S Hughes| T: Miss L Harrison| OR:  83

Promising start in a Bumper last year but form tailed off pretty quickly for Jonjo O'Neill. Possible the change of scenery will sharpen him up and interesting he is dropped in trip for his debut for his new yard. Worth a betting check.

Daring Knightp1,t1100
Age: 4|  Weight: 10-11| J: Harry Skelton| T: D Skelton| OR:  82

Still a maiden with very little form to suggest he can get off the mark at the first time of asking for his new yard. Stable has a good strike-rate at this course but fitting of cheeckpieces creates the impression this is a fact-finding mission.

Bygones For Coins13
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-3| J: C O'Farrell| T: Kenny Johnson| OR:  74

With just one win over 1m2f on the Flat (from 62 starts under both codes) to his name, the gelding's limitations have been laid bare for quite some time. Can make the running but a risky bet to suggest he'll still be there when it really matters.

Dizoard19
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-1| J: Ross Chapman(5)| T: I Jardine| OR:  72

Another that has found winning to be an elusive property and given the way she was tailed off in her latest outing, others make much more appeal on recent evidence.

Gasolineb1,t9
Age: 5|  Weight: 10-0| J: A Nicol| T: M E Sowersby| OR:  69

Failed to complete in three of his last four starts and looks to be one for the very brave only. Previous form on undulating tracks being poor is another reason to give him the swerve from a betting perspective.

One In A Rowp,t1931
Age: 10|  Weight: 10-0| J: Henry Brooke| T: Julia Brooke| OR:  64
100/1
Best efforts so far have been posted over fences at this course - hurdles form uninspiring though and the old man of the party make very limited appeal on debut for a new yard after a long absence.

Forecasts

Mathayus (11/4), On Alberts Head (6/1), Apachee Prince (15/2), Oishin (8/1), Mileva Roller (8/1), Fit For Fifty (8/1), Daring Knight (8/1), Windy Writer (12/1), Dizoard (25/1), Ever So Much (33/1), Bygones For Coins (66/1), One In A Row (100/1), Gasoline (100/1)

Verdict

It may be worth siding with youth on this occasion and giving MATHAUS a chance to build on what was a solid effort in defeat last time out. His yard has won with almost a fifth of its runners sent to this course over the last five years and they look to have another leading candidate this time around. Apachee Prince won well last time and is respected under just a 4lb higher mark, while Oishin and Mileva Roller are a couple of others that have little to find to get competitive at this level; and complete the shortlist.
  1. Mathayus
  2. Apachee Prince
  3. Oishin
