Caught the eye as a rare juvenile debut winner for his trainer when beating two previous (penalised) winners and springing a 50-1 surprise at Haydock (6f, good to firm) in a similar event last month. Should be fine on good ground or faster, though will have a bit to prove if it turns softer. Will need to improve to defy a penalty but that is not ruled out.

Ran well for a long way until weakening out of it on debut at Windsor (6f, good to firm) last week. Should be able to improve for that first experience, though perhaps asking a bit much for him to be up to winning against one or two of these on this occasion.

45,000gns yearling. Closely related to a 1m winner and a half-brother to the Listed-placed 7f 2yo /US 1m winner Ptolemaic. Dam is an unraced half-sister to 1m2f winner/Oaks fourth Inchila, out of a 1m4f Listed winner. Nice pedigree, though yard not known for juvenile success and he looks one to follow when stepping up in trip.

Outperformed his 12-1 SP when beaten just a nose into second at Carlisle (6f, good to firm) on debut earlier in the month. Front pair were 5L clear of the remainder there and although it was not a strong contest, it was still an impressive first effort and he looks to have the profile of an unpenalised winner here.

Never dangerous or competitive on debut over C&D (good) at the most recent meeting and beaten 10½L in that. Hard to see him making the sizeable improvement needed to win today, but can hopefully take a step in the right direction.

Sent off at 66-1, but blew those odds off the boards when fourth of eight (beaten 3¾L) on debut at Wolverhampton (7f, AW) earlier in the month. Drop in trip is an interesting move, given that he seemed to do better later in that contest, but you couldn't rule him out of the prize money if there is improvement in him.

£17,000 yearling who rose to €32,000 at the May breeze-ups. First foal of a 5f AW 2yo winning half-sister to a 6f Fibresand winner, out of a 7½f 2yo winning half-sister to 7f/1m Group Three winner Cheyenne Star (second dam of Barney Roy). Good pedigree and given that they start her here, she has probably been showing some ability. Market check advised.

Forecasts

Hey Jonesy (11/8), Staxton (5/2), Barefoot Baby (5/1), Blackheath (8/1), Push N'Pull (12/1), Fiery Breath (12/1), The Throstles (14/1), Fitzrovia (14/1)

Verdict

Staxton defied all the usual pre-race comments about Tim Easterby's runners needing a couple of outings when beating a decent field at Haydock and this could be a good opportunity for him to follow up at his local track. However, defying penalties in these races is never as easy as it may appear and therefore HEY JONESY, who also ran really well on debut in defeat, might be able to make the most of the 6lb he receives from the topweight. The Throstles is another who belied his debut odds and could pick up some money this time, though the potential fly in the ointment looks to be the nicely-bred debutante Barefoot Baby, who represents top connections and is from a family of juvenile success.
