Hasn't run his best races over this distance so far but that may not have been down to the distance, and his sole win to date came on soft ground. He looks high enough in the weights, though.

Made a winning reappearance on handicap debut at Newbury in May (1m2f, soft), and has been raised 10lb by the handicapper since. That seems slightly harsh, for all it was an impressive display, but he is proven on this type of ground and should go well.

Not beaten far in a Listed contest at Haydock last September but fairly unconvincing since and looks to have too much on his plate on the basis of his current handicap mark.

Hasn't been able to build on a promising start to his handicap company since dropping down from some failed attempts at making at impact at pattern level, likely due to his much higher mark. Close third to Atty Persse in the King George V is great form though, and he could go close here.

Won at 7f handicap at Catterick last July but remains 9lb higher than that winning mark and has run all her best races on much faster ground than what she's likely to get here.

Went close in a slightly easier race over C&D last time out, but is now only a little higher in the weights. Would need to progress, but no question that she ran a career-best last time.

Unlucky to be beaten only narrowly at Epsom last time and is just a fair 4lb higher in the weights now. Ought to have a great chance here if able to replicate that, but is unraced so far on soft ground.

Hat-trick seeker who is up 6lb from a win at Leicester last time (1m2f, good to soft), but who has progressed with each start so far and promises to be able to offer more.

Winner of a valuable handicap at Musselburgh in April, but that was on a much quicker surface, and he's also untested over intermediate trips.

Progressive type who opened his account at Redcar last time out (1m, good). Has few worries concerning trip and ground but this opening mark doesn't look prohibitive and therefore he isn't ruled out.

Consistent sort who got off the mark last time in the style of a horse who should enjoy the return to this trip, which is a furlong further. Has something to prove on the forecast ground but looks set for a big run if handling it.

Little impact since switched to handicaps and his two previous runs over this trip raise some questions over his ability to properly stay beyond 1m.

Forecasts

Defoe (5/2), Meteor Light (11/2), Emenem (7/1), The Statesman (7/1), Bear Valley (8/1), Appointed (10/1), Everything For You (11/1), Society Red (16/1), Temple Church (16/1), Star of Rory (20/1), Cullingworth (25/1), Teofonic (25/1)

Verdict

The suggestion here is EMENEM, who was unlucky to be beaten at Epsom last time and has shown some good progression through his short career so far. He may have to prove himself on soft ground here, if the forecast conditions come to fruition, but there should be further improvement to come and he should still be on a fair weight up only 4lb. Bear Valley ran a fine race in the King George V at Royal Ascot and should do so again here, while The Statesman could have more to offer at this trip.
  1. Emenem
  2. Bear Valley
  3. The Statesman
