Likely to handle the conditions fine and takes a step down the grading ladder here after solid efforts at both Ripon and Haydock. Only negative would be that he's hard to win with (no win since 2015) but that aside, good chance on the figures.

Took advantage of a good looking handicap mark to score at Chester last time, showing a good attitude in the finish. Handles soft ground fine and still on a good mark historically. New yard may be able to find more improvement yet.

Was made favourite for the race Dragon KIng won at Chester last time out but he couldn't get near the leaders, and was never in it. Previous better effort came on quicker ground too, so has a bit to find overall.

Only the one win from 43 starts on turf, which is a concern in itself, but form appears to have gone off the boil since returning from a short break. Yard in no great form either and others look stronger.

Handles some cut underfoot and looks to be on the way back to some of his better form judged on efforts at Ayr recently. Nicely weighted on the best of his form and gives the impression his turn isn't far away. One for the shortlist.

In great form and has struck up a good rapport with this rider recently, gaining reward for some consistent efforts at Windsor recently. Handles some cut and can't be ruled out here, despite a 3lb rise and this looking a more competitive contest.

Won at Thirsk at the end of May, gaining his reward for a series of consistent efforts but not so good subsequent start and needs to bounce back now. Yard struggling for winners as well, and others preferred.

Had looked to be going the wrong way until stopping the rot at Thirsk on his latest start, beaten less than a length at Thirsk (from a good draw). Nudged up 2lb for that but still on a good mark on the best of his form, handles some cut, and chances if building on that effort.

Winner on soft ground at Catterick last October, so likely ground no issue, but recent form patchy at best. Return to a flatter track here may help, but there's still too much to prove at present.

Is a C&D winner here in the past, and handles soft ground, so no issues on those scores, but recent form nothing to write home about and despite falling handicap mark, others look to hold stronger claims today.

Most ground comes alike to him, so likely conditions no problem, and despite the rise in grade at York last time turned in his best effort for a while, finishing a close second. Possibly helped by a good draw there but not discounted, as he looks progressive anyway and may have more to come.

Made huge strides on Southwell's Fibresand surface this spring but turf efforts come nowhere near matching those wins and he never looked happy at Nottingham (soft ground) latest start. Too much to prove here.

Handles softer underfoot conditions and knows how to win, but it tends to be in lesser company than today's and he may find these a bit too hot to handle. Others readily preferred.

Verdict

Not much in the way of pace here, and this won't be run at a breakneck pace. In an open event, DARK DEFENDER should be prominent from the outset and gave notice his turn wasn't faraway with a solid effort last time out. He's taken to get the better of top weight Eccleston, dropping in grade here and will surely get back on the scoresheet sooner rather than later. Dragon King is another that looks to be on the way back to some better form and can't be discounted either.
