No match for Faugheen in this race a year ago, landed a Grade One at Punchestown in November but was firmly put in his place by Petit Mouchoir over C&D a month ago.
Promising novice last season, was seemingly poised to go very close when falling in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle in November but has since won a Grade One over this C&D in very good style. The one to beat on that evidence.
Very good as a novice last season, winning a Grade One over this C&D in February. Potentially wants further now to be at his optimum and no match for Petit Mouchoir over this trip a month ago.
Last season's Triumph Hurdle hero has struggled since his famous Cheltenham success and he has the best part of ten-length to find with Petit Mouchoir on their clash here at Christmas.
Desperately disappointing that Faugheen misses out on the race but that's sport and it leaves a quartet all eager to inherit his crown. Stablemate Nichols Canyon is the only rival ever to defeat Faugheen but he'll be hard-pressed to reverse C&D form with Petit Mouchoir from last month's Ryanair Hurdle. His trainer is enjoying a fine spell and his move between the final two flights last time was utterly decisive, ensuring connections will be confident of upholding that form. Assuming he's in the same mood, it's very tough to see how either Ivanovich Gorbatov or Footpad will bridge the gap but there remains some hope that last season's Triumph Hurdle hero can get back on track for the spring campaign and a positive run here would be a boost.
