The longest trip on this evening’s card and it usually pays to stick with horses who have either won or gone very close over these staying distances. Captain George won over course and distance the last day after getting first run and stayed on gamely to win by half a length. He’s only been beaten once in four starts at this track so must enter calculations to double up from a 2lb higher mark.
Charlie Mann seldom has a runner on the level so his Leorra may be worth monitoring in the betting following a decent debut on the synthetics last time after a couple of efforts over timber. A few others would have chances, mainly Volturnus and Dance Rock but the one I like here is the eight-year old KATIE GALE.
Since switching stables from Michael Appleby to Robin Brisland, she has posted a couple of good efforts on Southwell’s Fibresand from this mark of 62 and her form over this trip is very consistent, 2-1-3-2-2. The winner of her most recent outing went in again this week so the form looks solid and I like the fact that Luke Morris has kept the ride on this mare having rode her the last twice. Her trainer has a 22 per cent strike-rate at this course and although this is her first start on Tapeta, I’d have no worries that she won’t handle it as she’s gone well on the Polytrack before.

The penultimate race this evening looks a very weak handicap over the extended mile trip with not many bringing form to the table. Satchville Flyer has hit the crossbar recently and may have blown his chances of a win for now as he’s been raised a further 2lb for a half-length defeat last week. The King’s Steed was beaten two-and-a-half lengths when last sighted and the first and second have both franked the form since so he’d have a chance if reproducing that running, though was well beaten prior to that outing.
The Irish-raider SOCIETY RANGER looks the bet for me though on the back of some very good runs when sent over to Dunstall Park, where he’s won twice and finished a close fourth (which was against slightly better opposition) over this same trip. He’s able to run off the same mark as for his last success here when he scored by five lengths and the booking of Robert Winston (who was successful on him on other winning start) is very significant, while the fact that his only two career successes have come here adds to the market confidence in his obvious chance.
