14 years after partnering Sir Percy to victory in the Investec Derby, jockey Martin Dwyer has unearthed another live contender on Saturday.
He partners Pyledriver for his father-in-law William Muir, a colt who booked his place at Epsom with a stylish win in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Dwyer sat down to talk to Oli Bell about his chances in the Classic and you can watch the interview in full below.
The rider is confident his partner will handle the course at Epsom, a big test for any horse.
“You never know until you’ve done it but he ticks a lot of boxes – he will travel nicely but not too keenly. You’ll be able to chase him out the stalls and get where you need to be and then relax again – and that’s the key for any horse in the Derby. He’s quite athletic and has filled his frame now. He is stronger and if he’s travelling under his own steam I’m sure he’ll handle the track well.”
So what of the dangers?
“I think Kameko from Andrew Balding’s yard is the main one. He was an impressive winner of the Guineas and the Guineas is always the best trial for the Derby. You can’t knock Classic form. If he gets the mile-and-a-half I think he’s the one we have to beat but I do think that is a question mark.”
The pair discuss Pyledriver’s career to date, his trainer and that sunny afternoon when Sir Percy somehow found space up the far rail to land racing’s blue riband.
