King To Rule - 3.20 Newcastle - King Of The South
Try as I might, I just couldn’t find a bet over the jumps today and if I’m struggling to find something amongst a sea of my beloved 0-100s then you can bet your last quid Rory couldn’t either, so it’s to the Tapeta we turn for a couple of bets today.
The first comes in the shape of KING OF THE SOUTH in the 3.20, a ten furlong handicap. He’s got plenty going for him on his first run for William Knight, an infrequent visitor to Newcastle but he’s 3-20 with his horses here, and you’re well in front to level stakes backing them as well.
This is his first handicap after showing steady improvement for David Lanigan in the spring, all three runs coming on artificial surfaces and his final run of the three, when a staying-on third to Luncies over a mile at Lingfield, has worked out quite nicely, with the fourth and fifth both winning next time, and the winner himself successful off a mark of 94 at Kempton a couple of weeks ago.
That all makes him look well treated off a mark of 68 today, and both the Tapeta surface (is a son of Kingman, who has a better than expected strike rate on it) and step up in trip are positives. He has an absence to overcome but with improvement expected tonight, rates a bet.
Green To Go Well - 3.55 Newcastle - Greengage
I was with GREENGAGE last time out at Wolverhampton, as she looked to have been primed to have a crack at a race she’d won the year before but as things turned out, she found herself too far back in the pack to make a telling challenge (held up in rear, whereas the first three home all raced more prominently) but was still beaten under three lengths after staying on well late.
She gives the impression that she’s finding her form and another 2lb drop here won’t harm her chances any. Her Newcastle record reads 7133, and although George Ridsdale looks a solid favourite, she’s going to be a backable each-way price.
