It'll do... Yagood - 2.35 Yarmouth
Yagood was sent off at big prices and was well held in on his first three starts this year, but the market spoke for him from his much reduced mark at Chelmsford last time (went off favourite, previous three runs he went off 28/1, 40/1 and 14/1) and that support proved well founded, with the gelding finishing a close third in a blanket finish after leading in the final furlong.
The question is whether he’s capable of reproducing that effort back on turf today, and there are good reasons for thinking he can do so. He was third on his final start in France for John Hammond on heavy ground, so he will handle conditions at Yarmouth, and if he gets close to the form he showed there, he will make a mockery of his current rating.
All together now to back... Sands Chorus - 4.10 Newcastle
Sands Chorus was placed in a Cambridgeshire at his peak and although those glory days are in the past, he’s still more than capable at this much lower level, and there are good reasons for thinking he can get competitive.
His record at Newcastle reads 344, and while a recent effort over 1¼m here last month was more than respectable, his best efforts have come at a mile. The booking of Connor Beasley is of interest, with the rider in fine form at present, and having ridden an all-the-way winner here (at 16/1) from only two previous rides for Karen Tutty. Sands Chorus is best when dominating at a decent pace - that style of riding suits Beasley ideally - and it’s encouraging that the only other pace in the race comes from the appropriately names Out Of Breath, who has not been lasting home in his races of late.
Ready, aim... Cesifire - 6.10 Kempton
Adam West’s Cesifire is returning from three-month break, which is a slight worry, but the daughter of War Command ran well enough on her return to suggest she won’t lack for fitness, and she has been progressive since under positive tactics, winning at Chelmsford and finishing second at Windsor, both in July.
The Windsor contest has produced a number of next-time-out winners, and she would have gone close but for hanging left late in the day, which allowed the winner a gap to come through on the favoured rail. What appeals most about her here is that she is drawn in stall 1, and will almost certainly get an uncontested lead on the inside, as the race is contested mainly by hold-up horses, with the few who might go forward drawn wide. That should provide her with a golden opportunity to set her own pace early and wind things up when required.
