Stamina can be just as important as raw talent in the Classics and, boasting both attributes, QUADRILATERAL looks a worthy favourite in Sunday's Qipco 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

The daughter of Frankel, whose progeny tend to have plenty of stamina, was unbeaten in three starts last season, scoring by nine lengths at Newbury (7f) on the second occasion and then finding plenty for pressure to out-gallop her rivals in the Fillies' Mile over this course and distance in October.

With a couple of furlongs to run on the latter occasion, it looked doubtful if Quadrilateral would get involved but she responded exceptionally well for Jason Watson, digging deep to collar the May Hill winner Powerful Breeze (who has had a setback since) with re-opposing duo Love and Boomer in third and fifth respectively.

That looks strong form as Love had previously won the Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh and, with the pace likely to be strong, the selection's resolution can, as in the Fillies' Mile, come into play where it matters.

Love seems destined to stay middle distances being a full sister to both Peach Tree and Flattering and, while her trainer Aidan O'Brien is always to be deeply respected, it remains to be seen if she is quite quick enough.

The other main formline involves the Cheveley Park in which Millisle appeared to out-stay Raffle Prize in the closing stages.

However, the runner-up was sent on a long way from home that day and may not have been seen to best advantage. Neither filly is guaranteed to get a mile, though: Millisle's sire Starspangledbanner was a smart sprinter and most of his offspring are speedy, while Raffle Prize is by another sprinter, Slade Power, who has a higher 'dosage' (the average distance range of offspring) than Starspangledbanner.

Mark Johnston's filly, who won the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at the Newmarket July meeting, later ran an outstanding race when splitting the colts Earthlight and Golden Horde in the Prix Morny.

If - and it's quite a big if - she does get the trip, a repeat of those efforts will see Raffle Prize go very close.

At Haydock, SAFE VOYAGE is fancied to repeat last year's victory in the Betway Spring Trophy.

John Quinn's much improved seven-year-old is unbeaten in four course visits and developed into a high quality performer last season, winning the John of Gaunt Stakes over this course and distance before running fine races behind the likes of Romanised, One Master and King Of Change.

Ground conditions are now described as good to soft at Haydock (with a bit more rain possible) and this is important for Safe Voyage, who seems best suited by some cut in the ground and is a very strong stayer at this trip.
