THREAT was flat to the boards most of the way in the July Cup last month, but should relish the return to seven furlongs in the Unibet Hungerford Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.

Richard Hannon's colt was one of the leading two-year-olds in 2019, winning the Gimcrack and Champagne Stakes (7f) before finding the six furlongs of the Middle Park Stakes too sharp in September, when staying on into fifth behind Earthlight and Golden Horde.

Connections tried Threat over a mile on his reappearance in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and, although he ran like a non-stayer, it was noticeable how well he travelled into the straight against some truly top-class rivals.

Over what looks to be his ideal trip, Pat Dobbs' mount can serve it up to likely favourite Dream Of Dreams whose best two runs have come in the last two runnings of the Diamond Jubilee over six furlongs at Ascot.

Earlier, TRITONIC could be worth an interest upped in trip in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Geoffrey Freer Stakes after a couple of excellent efforts this season.

A course winner last term, Alan King's colt chased home the smart Highland Chief over a mile and a quarter at Royal Ascot, and then made Subjectivist work hard in the Glasgow Stakes (1m3f) at Hamilton.

The latter has since run a blinder behind Mogul and Highland Chief in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood and looks a contender for the St Leger.

With plenty of stamina in his family, Tritonic should certainly stay - and may improve a good deal - over this mile and five furlongs even though he has a bit to find on official ratings.

In the Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Handicap, HMS PRESIDENT should appreciate what amounts to a drop in class.

Tom Queally's mount ran a solid fourth behind Highland Chief and Tritonic in that hot handicap at Royal Ascot before taking third behind Zabeel Champion at Newmarket's July Festival.

Both of those races were at Class 2 level and, while HMS President now takes on older horses, this race is a Class 4 and the opposition looks weaker.

The selection's trainer Eve Johnson Houghton also runs Ridgeway who enters handicap company for the first time after beating Aquascape (well beaten since) and two others in a Bath maiden. The grey is an unknown quantity but this is a step up.
