4:05 Epsom

This looks quite a competitive race at first glance, but we both think there is a fair bit more to come from WHISKEY PETE, who has been slowly coming to the boil after a bad start to the season.

Pulled-up at York on his return after pulling himself into the ground, he was midfield here on Derby Day in the Lester Piggott handicap. It’s possible to crab that performance, but he was probably not fully fit after his York antics and wasn’t given a hard time when his winning chance had gone in a race which was won by recent Doonside Cup hero Persica.

A big eyecatcher in the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot won by Hand of God (drawn wide, but had to cut back to the rail to get a run in the straight and looked unlucky), he then finished immediately ahead of a pair of next-time winners at York and returned from a short break with an excellent second to the progressive Brioni at Ascot three weeks ago.

The pair of them pulled clear of the field before Brioni asserted and Whiskey Pete was eased in the last 100 yards. He was 2¼ lengths ahead of the third that day, but is value for double that margin, and the handicapper has merely nudged him back up by 1lb, having dropped him the same amount for each of his previous three runs.

The concern is whether he will handle the track at the second time of asking, but I’d be wary of drawing conclusions from his previous run here, and his victory in a soft-ground nursery at York last autumn shows that the going will be no problem.

5:15 Epsom

A few can be fancied here in the conditions with recent C&D one-two Hodler and Redredrobin of obvious interest, while Marlay Park is better than he showed in that contest and is a regular over track and trip. Tanmawy beat Redredrobin here two starts back and Little Boy Blue is also a C&D winner this year. There are also a pair who have become well treated on old form, with Autumn Festival and Good Karma both capable of making a mockery of their current marks if coaxed back to form.

Hodler is probably the most solid of those mentioned and has won both starts over C&D when the ground has been very soft, which he seems to need. Up 6lb for his latest win, he’s much respected, but I believe that COME ON YOU SPURS is the one to beat here, with 7f and a hood her main requirements.

She has won over 1m1f this season, but travels really strongly in her races and looked to benefit from the drop back to this trip when winning on soft ground at Sandown last time. She has a bit up her sleeve that day after idling in front, is probably best produced late off a strong pace, and has plenty of speed to aim at here. She has progressed all year but has only gone up gradually in the weights and can rate higher still when things drop perfectly.
