I was pleased to see Sands Of Mali make a winning reappearance in the Prix Sigy at Chantilly last week. It was a solid performance, he gave plenty of weight all round and did a professional job on them.
There’s still plenty of improvement in him and going to France I was thinking of heading to the Sandy Lane at Haydock next with him and I see no reason to change that plan.
Looking ahead to Newmarket on Tuesday and Pesci is our first runner in the Montaz Restaurant Novice Stakes. I’d be surprised if he could win a maiden here on debut but it’s a nice track to start out on. He’s a horse who is ready to go and I hope he runs well.
We're double-handed in the Plusvital Energene-Q10 Handicap. I think the handicapper has Withernsea right now. He's been batting away in these big handicaps all his life and managed to land one last term. I'd love him to do so again this time around but he might need a bit of help.
Constantino seems to be a better horse on the all-weather – he has a higher rating there. However, there's no reason at all why he shouldn't be as effective on turf – he's won on grass before and is a horse we like. I can see him running well here.
Stamp Hill didn't stay in the Lincoln. He was badly drawn that day and by the time he'd got across to them the race was over – and then he didn't get home. Seven furlongs in the Bet365 Handicap will be much more to his liking and I just want to see him run his race.
George Bowen continues to frustrate me. He's in great form at home and looks an absolute picture right now. We're trying something different with him in the Quy Mill & Spa Handicap, sticking a visor on, dropping back to five furlongs and letting him run. We'll see what happens.
Onto Wednesday and Eastern Impact reappears in the opening Weatherbys General Stud Book Handicap. He could be a touch better for the race but loves the track here and always runs well. Hopefully he'll do so again.
Great Prospector wears a visor for the first time in the bet365 European Free Handicap having worked extremely well in it at home. That said he has always gone well at Musley Bank but despite being rated 106 has been a touch disappointing.
He ran a strange race at Newcastle on his reappearance, dropping away then running on again and hopefully the headgear will help.
Finally Forest Ranger reappears in the bet365 Earl Of Sefton Stakes. It's a strong renewal of the race and our fellow will be better for the run. He's a big horse who is working well, we took him away the other day and he went very nicely. He's been gelded over the winter and that will help him.
