ENTITY OF SUBSTANZ – 4.53 Ludlow (NAP)

Dan Skelton seems to be finding the key to ENTITY OF SUBSTANZ and it might just all come together for him in the Ian Meadow’s 65th Year Handicap Hurdle at Ludlow on Thursday. Put in his place by a typical Sue Smith embryonic staying chaser last time in a three-mile handicap hurdle at Wetherby, he shaped nicely the time before at Market Rasen and dropping back to 2m5f could work the oracle.

BRIAN THE SNAIL – 2.45 Newcastle

Old BRIAN THE SNAIL is still churning out good performances at the age of 11 and he could notch his 14th win in the 6f handicap at Newcastle (2.45). He ran a cracker in second at Wolverhampton just 10 days ago so he’s in good form and he likes Newcastle with his last win coming here. He’s nicely drawn with pace to his inside and with the talented Warren Fentiman taking 7lb off it would be no surprise if the grey can swoop down the outside to claim the spoils.

SPACE VOYAGE – 4.10 Taunton

SPACE VOYAGE can go in again for Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen in the Freda Woolley Memorial Mares’ Handicap Chase at Taunton. The eight-year-old bolted up returned to fences last time at Huntingdon and even off revised terms runner-up Ede’iffs Rock has a real job on to reverse that form. The selection looks to have more to offer in this sphere and Murphy has found her a very nice opportunity in this 0-120 where she could simply outclass them.

WILLOW’S KISS – 6.00 Chelmsford

I don’t think it would be that much of a surprise to see improvement from WILLOW’S KISS on handicap debut in the 7.00 Chelmsford. She’s qualified for handicaps on the back of her second and third career runs early this year and after running well sent off 250/1 here in January she was better again at Lingfield last time beaten just less than three lengths. She was outpaced that day after being keen early, but I like the way she finished last time and if she improves for that experience she could get involved from an opening mark of 60.

Friday selections

SUBSTITUTE - 5.15 Southwell (NAP)

Charlie (and Mark) tends to run some of his nicer long-term prospects in the Glorious Goodwood nurseries and it wouldn't be a surprise to see SUBSTITUTE really kick on as a three-year-old after the filly book-ended her juvenile campaign with victories. A winner on debut last May, she signed off with a handicap success when stepped up to seven furlongs for the first time at Newcastle in late-October, looking decent value for the neck verdict over Hot To Dot who went close again on her next start. Substitute, a half-sister to Have Secret who ran well off marks in the low-90s at at three, has only gone up 5lb to a mark of 81 and the move up to a mile could easily help unlock further improvement.

ROHAAN - 3.35 Lingfield

ROHAAN understandably takes a few runs to reach full fitness these days but he's obviously in good order now based on his two recent runs at Southwell. He didn't get a great run through the field last week but still flew home to be beaten less than a length and, running off the same mark (87) which is 16lb lower than when last successful, he's worth sticking with as Hayley Turner comes in for the ride at Lingfield.

WALKINTHECOTSWOLDS - 4.20 Ffos Las

WALKINTHECOTSWOLDS was beaten favourite at Bangor earlier in the month but I'm not convinced we saw the best of her there and she's better judged on her previous hurdling success at Chepstow when seemingly loving the heavy ground on her return from wind surgery. Switched to fences now, she's certainly bred for the job being a half-sister to useful chaser Crebilly and there's a fair chance she's starting out off a good mark.

DUHALLOW TOMMY - 4.33 Newbury

Bumper winner DUHALLOW TOMMY didn't cut any ice over hurdles but the move to chasing worked a treat last term, the horse racking up three straight wins. Things have clearly got a bit hard after shooting up the weights but his two most recent efforts this winter have been promising and left the impression there is a little more improvement come. He's expected to get an 'uncontested' lead in this small field and if Kevin Brogan gets him into a nice rhythm out in front then he could be a very hard horse to pass as he'll be fully effective on the soft ground.
