JIPCOT – 2.40 Cheltenham (NAP)

More often than not, the Coral Cup is run at a frenetic gallop, and this year’s renewal looks likely to set up that way, with plenty of pace in the field.

A strongly-run race on likely good to soft ground will very much suit JIPCOT, who had such conditions when bolting up in a competitive handicap at Newbury in December. He’d not shown much on his first two starts for this yard, but he proved a totally different proposition with a good pace to aim at, ridden very cold but just picking rivals off from three out to win going away.

Jipcot has run to a similar level when hitting the frame on his last two starts, but both of those were over three miles, and he doesn’t strike you as a proper stayer. He again travelled very well at Haydock last time, catching the eye as he cruised into contention before not finding as much as expected.

Jipcot races from the same mark now and, at around the 20/1 mark, he looks a knocking each-way bet in a typically competitive Cheltenham handicap.

YOUDECIDE – 2.58 Huntingdon

YOUDECIDE cost £90,000 after winning an Irish point and he started a strong favourite for his Rules debut in a bumper at Sandown in November.

He was found wanting for speed at the business end of the race on that occasion, and that has been mirrored in his three runs over hurdles at up to two miles, too.

Youdecide is bred to stay well, though, and he has the potential to improve a fair bit now moving up in trip on his handicap debut.

An opening mark of 90 is no gift on what he’s achieved so far, but he represents a yard who know the time of day, and a very capable claimer now takes of 5lb in a handicap which shouldn’t take much winning.

COMTE DE LOIR – 5.05 Newcastle

COMTE DE LOIR has shown improved form since moving up in trip and entering handicaps, much shorter in the betting than usual when runner-up at Southwell in January, doing really well to get as close as he did from an unhelpful position.

He was given too much to do in a steadily-run race that day and confirmed the promise of that effort when going one place better at Kempton just eight days later.

Comte de Loir can be marked up again for getting his head in front in a race run at an even slower tempo, produced to lead over five furlongs out and displaying a terrific attitude to get the better of a sustained duel with the runner-up. He looks progressive now and a subsequent 3lb rise shouldn’t be enough to stop him.

LIGHT UP OUR STARS – 7.30 Wolverhampton

Scott Dixon hasn’t had the greatest winter, but there have been more positive signs of late, and LIGHT UP OUR STARS caught the eye somewhat when runner-up over this course and distance a fortnight ago.

Dropped out early from a wide draw he wasn’t in the best position when the pace lifted, but the manner in which he stayed on once in the clear in the final furlong suggests he’s back in top form.

The handicapper has left him on the same mark, which is 7lb lower than his last winning one, and from a better draw, he’s expected to launch another bold bid.
