Wednesday selections
Ever Hopefull – 2.24 Newcastle
A strong pace is forecast for this competitive handicap which should work in the favour of Ever Hopefull who appreciated a break and a switch of yards when winning comfortably at Wolverhampton last month.
She has only been put up 3 lb by the handicapper but looks to have plenty more to offer on the all-weather this winter. Her yard is in good form (notably the fillies whose form figures of late read 1-4-2) and she can add further success.
Master Brefni – 2.30 Catterick
Flamelco was a good winner over C&D last time out but an 8lb rise for that win makes life tougher in this competitive little handicap in which Master Brefni is fancied to benefit most from the likely strong gallop.
Both Langton Wold and Ensel du Perche like to get on with things, while Flamelco was also given a positive ride the last time Jay Tidball was on-board, so there should be a good pace for confirmed hold-up performer Master Brefni to chase.
Back in handicap company after a fine effort behind Caldwell Potter at Carlisle, he can make amends for his late fall (when in front) here in March.
Thursday selections
ASK ME ANOTHER - 3.10 Huntingdon (NAP)
Fitness has to be taken on trust but ASK ME ANOTHER looks well treated for this seasonal return and handicap debut having last been seen comfortably accounting for the re-opposing Rockola at Hereford in April. The placed horses from that race are both now rated 97 (as is Ask Me Another) while her Taunton third has worked out well enough for the grade. Ask Me Another is from a good staying family so should relish this trip at a track where her trainer has saddled five winners from 26 runners.
SO MANY ROADS - 1.40 Ayr
Take a chance with SO MANY ROADS who won this race in 2023 from a 3 lb lower mark in good style. Not an awful lot has gone right since then (thrice a beaten favourite) and So Many Roads has been off the best part of a year but sports a tongue tie for just the second time and has his first start since a wind operation which may yet help him recapture his form. It's been a fairly quiet season for Donald Whillans who has run four horses who have raced seven times, winning twice to give a 29% strike rate and this is a course where he's enjoyed plenty of success (runs two on the card).
JIMMY KNOCKER - 3.32 Newcastle
Rebel Empire was probably in a different league to his rivals at Southwell, winning by over three lengths, before finishing second and first (on New Year's Eve) off a 9 lb higher mark. Only the last home has run again but while the form remains relatively untested there was promise in the run of JIMMY KNOCKER in fourth. It was his first start since being gelded having had three quick runs in the spring and he did enough to suggest that he can win races from his current mark. He's related to a couple of all-weather winners, one of whom is a stablemate so the trainer knows the family well.
