Racing tip of the day Wednesday March 22

David John says Oscars Boss can bounce back from an expensive failure at Plumpton last time in the opener at Warwick.

Recommended bets:

1pt win Oscars Boss in 2.20 Warwick at 11/4

It is a case of small fields for Haydock and workaday stuff down at Warwick but the opening Executive Hire Show Maiden Hurdle at 1420GMT does look to contain a handful of interesting contenders.

If you follow market forces, then you will be on the David Dennis-trained Shanty Town as he drops in grade from handicap company on his third start back from a lengthy absence.

The form he has shown has him in the mix once more but the three runners who look a bit more interesting are Fortified Bay, Robbin’hannon and Oscars Boss with the vote on this occasion going to the latter.

He did not exactly make a flying start to his career with Neil Mulholland having arrived from Adrian Maguire’s yard in Ireland when eclipsed at Plumpton in January.

On face value, it was hardly the worst performance in the world to finish second behind The Caller unless you were one of the punters to pile in and smash it off the boards into 1/4 - clearly a convincing victory had been expected.

The 7yo has been given time to get over that so this robust looker should benefit from a step up in distance and looks well worth a chance to make amends.

Alan King endured a pretty quiet week at Cheltenham but his Fortified Bay has shown some ability and is player but perhaps more interesting still is the Philip Hobbs beast Robbin’hannon.

Current connections coughed up over £100,000 for the gelding following a three-length victory last November over three miles in a Dromahane point-to-point.

He will have no problems with this trip, has Dicky Johnson doing the steering and could be anything but slight preference on this occasion is for Oscars Boss in a race that should make for interesting viewing.
