It could pay to take a chance on HEROIQUE DE MAULDE here despite a lengthy absence.
The Oliver Greenall/Josh Guerriero inmate has an excellent record over fences, which – aside from an unfortune run-out in France - reads 31212312. He took well to British chasing for James Ewart in 2022/23, winning at Doncaster and beaten by a horse who defied a 14lb higher mark when second at Newcastle when last seen in February 2023. He returns off a 3lb lower mark himself and is well treated if fully fit and there are strong reasons to believe that he will be.
His stable has an excellent record with their handicappers after a break, with the latest to come back from an absence to win being Horsesome Harry at Carlisle on Monday.
Horsesome Harry was the fourth of six runners this month to win after a break of five months or more, with Gaboriot also running the race of his life in the Grand Sefton at Aintree on Saturday to be third. Backing all such horses blind is profitable, as it is going back much further in terms of sample size.
The stable also have the much shorter-priced Jagwar in this field, which will help hold up the price of the selection, and the J P McManus-owned gelding will be a warm order, but I wasn’t impressed with his jumping when he won on his chasing debut at Wetherby.
He’s obviously capable of better, but was another winning for the yard off an absence and won’t necessarily improve in fitness terms, for all he may do in the jumping department.
1.25 Bangor
Regal Blue was ostensibly hard to predict last season and was well held on his seasonal return at Newbury, but it’s not hard to find a more positive reading of his form, and he’s best on soft or heavy ground when ridden positively. Both his wins last term came at up to 3m and when allowed to dictate. Somewhat bizarrely, he was often dropped right out in other races and his record under such tactics was PPP.
Aside from those abject displays when dropped out, his record on soft or heavy (including in points) is an impressive 113211. He is capable of going well fresh, winning after a break on his hurdles debut and he could not have been given a more negative ride on his return last season, when his race was effectively over before the second hurdle. With Jonjo and A J O’Neill in excellent form at the moment, he’s taken to make the most of what is a very fair mark.
If Regal Blue is not sent forward here, then that would play into the hands of Shan Blue, who would likely get an easy lead with only Bretney left among the possible pace angles. Dan Skelton’s gelding isn’t the force of old having had his issues, but he probably needs to dominate to win and would be dangerous if handed an uncontested lead.
I’ll be watching Nick Scholfield’s body language carefully at the start!
