MAKEEN has better recent form on turf but has become well-handicapped even on his old all-weather form and is worth chancing in a race where few know how to win. Two course runs have been discouraging, but Julie Camacho’s eight-year-old has been placed three times in six starts on the Tapeta at Newcastle, all in better grade than this, and was also placed off a stone higher at Doncaster last month. The handicapper has quickly released his grip since then, and with Julie Camacho operating at a 19% strike-rate in the last four weeks, Makeen should be very competitive in an admittedly open race.

Of the others, Eden Storm also makes some appeal. Jack Nicholls is a positive jockey booking for Pat Morris and his 7lb claim makes the five-year-old look competitive, and he has been running consistently well on the all-weather in recent months from higher marks.

7:05 Windsor – Class 3 (0-95) Handicap 6f

He hasn’t been the most consistent, but CHIEF MANKATO has bounced back to his best on recent starts, building on a good second over C&D when winning at Chepstow from Jax Edge and Cindy Lou Who. The latter has won subsequently to confirm the value of the form, and given two of his three best efforts have come at Windsor, Chief Mankato looks value to confirm himself an improved performer by defying a 5lb rise in the weights.

Ed Bethell has a tremendous record when initially taking on horses from other trainers, with a remarkable nine winners from 16 runners making their stable debut having moved from another yard in the last two years. He runs ALTMORE here and the well-bred son of Showcasing is taken to enhance that record on his first start since leaving William Haggas.

Haggas is a hard act to improve on, but Altmore hasn’t really fulfilled his potential for the Newmarket handler after showing abundant early promise. He has retuned to form with creditable efforts on his last two starts on turf in headgear, and having slipped further in the weights, is on a mark he can do some damage off.

Altmore’s latest run saw him finish just three-parts of a length behind Sword at Haydock and Sword ran well when a close third in the International Handicap at Ascot on Saturday. This represents an easier task, and if Altmore is to get back to winning ways, today looks the day to be with him.
