Rory Delargy marks your card this Tuesday with two selections at Huntingdon and Lingfield.
1pt win Lunar Ocean in the 2.35 Huntingdon at 5/2 (General) min 5/2
0.5pts e.w Ballygelly in the 3.20 Lingfield at 16/1 (General - ⅕ 1,2,3) min 12/1
The Wolf is the class act of this veterans’ field; he’s well handicapped at present and whilst he’s not the horse he once was, these veterans’ races will offer him a more realistic chance of success this season. On the negative side, this will be his first start since June, and I suspect he’s going to need the run, while he has an unfortunate habit of throwing in a blunder at inopportune times and that makes him hard to support with confidence.
Special Acceptance looks the pick today. He refound some of his better form to finish second on his first start for Billy Aprahamian at Uttoxeter last month, finding only the unexposed Vision de Maine too good, and the pair eighteen lengths clear of the third. That looks decent form for the grade. We saw the yard’s Pep Talking win recently on his second run back after a break and with conditions fine today, he can go one better than last year when second in this corresponding race.
Billy Aprahamian is taken to get a double on the card courtesy of LUNAR OCEAN, who went close on his return from a break in a similar contest at Market Rasen last time.
Lunar Ocean looked set to win when taking over from Filanderer at the penultimate fence last time having travelled best but he made an error at the last (jumped really well up to that point) and allowed the winner a second bite of the cherry. He did carry his head high there, but I’d still be inclined to blame his defeat on a lack of race fitness and he should make amends if jumping as well on the whole here.
The aforementioned Vision De Maine runs here off a 7lb higher mark than for his Uttoxeter win and if Special Acceptance does the business earlier in the day, he can be expected to be a short price here. He’s respected on that basis, but there is an interesting alternative in the shape of BALLYGELLY here.
Ballygelly makes his handicap chase debut after three runs over hurdles, which has handed him a mark of just 73 to kick off with, but this winning pointer is likely to find this a much more suitable test, going up in trip as he does. Normally such a horse coming from Emma-Jane Bishop might not make too many ripples, but her Haafback made a winning chase debut after just the five goes over hurdles at Ludlow last week, and at a good price as well, so I’d not be dismissive of Ballygelly’s chance despite some moderate-looking form figures to date.
